The new Stockbridge?

Post by Jamesie » 01 Apr 2006, 03:08

Porty was described to me tonight as potentially the new Stockbridge, with the trigger mechanism for this transformation being the opening of somewhere equivalent to Hectors or the Bailey, which would require a degree of guts on the part of publicans.

What do we think?

If we can swap Hectors and the Baillie for a branch of the Buffalo Grill and a Bert's Bar then maybe.

Last time I was in the Baillie I thought it over priced, staffed by inattentive, sullen youths and the clientele seemed to be a right bunch of ya yas.

I was quite saddened by this as I used to drink there, and in other Stockbridge bars, years ago and thought it was a great place.

That was when you were an inattentive sullen youth - then you started drinking in the pubs of Porty and found real class
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!

Ho ho!

Actually, it was within the last few years.

I asked for a gin and tonic and when I picked the glass up off the bar it was roasting hot at the base; obviously fresh out of the washer.

The barman took a right hump when I demanded a replacement.

I spent a wild summer in one of the Stockbridge colony houses in the early 80s. We were regulars in the Antiquary, usually slouched into a beaten up sofa while 'White Rabbit' played on the jukebox. Nico used to hang out there in those days with Rab from the Scars, though I only found this out recently. I've always had a soft spot for laid back, hippy-dippy Stockbridge but I feel it has lost its soul in recent years.

There's an obvious gap in the market for an interesting bar in Portobello. It's only a matter of time before someone realises that and cashes in on a clientele whose needs currently aren't being met. In ten years time, communities will be vying to be 'the next Portobello'.

I recall hanging out in the Antiquary on Monday nights before the gigs at Tiffanys. That would have been late seventies/early eighties.

They used to have a computer snooker game in there that was well cool. I played that a lot as I could never get near the comfy sofas for all the hippies.

That also happened to me in the said pub  barman also wasn't too happy with my complaint either.

I agree, I wish someone would hurry up and open one! :D Porty is definitely getting better for eating places so a nice bar would be brill.

HA!

Let's cross that place off the list for good then.
