DIY SOS

I've got a bit a poser - I have a cantilever mount to fix to a modern plasterboard wall for my dad's small LCD TV.

The instructions talk about securing to the centre of a stud .... but how do I indentify where a suitable stud is? I'm used to brick/stone walls!

I've tried doing a Basil Fawlty tapping on my own plasterboard walls but to no avail.

Anyone got any advice, pretty please??

If you can't find a suitable stud one of those thingy type things which kind of open up behind the plasterboard type thing might do it - we put our bathroom cabinet up with them and they take a hell of a weight - my mascara collection must weigh about 20kg on its own.

Drill a small hole big enough to thread through a straightened coat hanger. Thread it through the hole sideways till it hit's a stud. Withdraw it marking the depth you pushed it to. Use it to measure from the hole to face of stud on the wall. Centre of stud should be 1 inch more (studs are likely to be 50mm wide at 600mm centres).

If in doubt drill a few small pilot holes to establish the exact location & width - you can always fill them if they're not hidden by the TV.

If you can't work it out by knocking on the wall then one way to be sure is to hammer a nail through the wall at various places - if it goes in really easy once it's through the plasterboard then you've not found the support/stud.

Oh and if they're not at 600 centres they'll be at 450 centres.

My dad might just remember what distance they are. He was an architect and was therefore much involved when the house was being built (although he's now 85 and memory not what it was

I've seen one of those thingy types...it's a bit like when you get heart surgery and they put one of those umbrella thingys up your artery and then open it up on the way out...well it has similarities with DIY... the blood and stuff

Here's a selection of plasterboard fixings.

Personally I'd try to locate the stud. Some fixings can take a lot of weight but they tend to be vulnerable to knocks. Plasterboard itself isn't that strong.

Then the studs will be at 18" or 24".

Me too, S. I really don't trust that JP. I mean, he wears mascara!!

My only problem is getting the TV where dad can see it comfortably from his bed and the length of wall is about 5 feet before the lavvie door.

Would it feesible (pace ecm) from a support point of view (Ho!) to put the blasted thing on the door jam?

I'd avoid attaching it to the door jamb but the door should give a fair indication of where the studs are. The frame of the door will be fixed into at least a single, or a double stud. So the next stud should be within 450-600 or so from the outside of the door frame.

If that's not a convenient postion consider a backing board. A bit of MDF or ply spanning the studs you can fix into where you want. As long as the board is a decent thickness 18-25mm you'll get a reasonable fixing. Not as good as a stud but better than plasterboard.

Tell him that its an HDTV with amazing pictures. Then tell him you are appearing on a reality DIY programme. He will think he is already watching TV. Do some adverts every now and again.

Sandra, you will totally confuse poopy. It is the bracket that fixes to the wall and then the TV to the bracket. Maybe that's what her problem is; hinge and bracket.

Have to confess that I chickened out of this DIY - in fact took the thingy back to Curry's today and got the Â£60 (!!!) refunded.

Instead I lugged* down to his place on the X6 bus a bamboo sort of thing from my own house that takes up much less space than the unit of dad's.

Anyway, I'm still extremely grateful for all the advice [esp Seanie's] which will come in useful some other time - or even to other POLers. Thank you again.
