bits in songs that are difficult to perfom live

Post by Dadaist » 14 Jun 2006, 15:20

There's one thing troubles me more than most and it's this.

Sometimes singer-songwriters must get vexed when they realize they have a hit on their hands - fine - but this means they have to trail round the world playing it in all weathers forever. And then after forever during the reformation, comeback or tax-reasons tour.

Fine - except if you have a certain set of circumstances on your hands.

1. George Michael "Ladies and Gentlemen - Mister Elton John!"

What does he do if Elton's not around to pop out of his piano hole and tinkle his bit of the song?

Same goes for any duet where the other singer is expected or announced.

2. Take That - what do they do for the Robbie bits?

3. Public Enemy - that bit in "Don't Believe The Hype" where they hand over to "Media Assassin" Harry Allen - what do they do?

4. Death. Admittedly INXS and Queen have solved this problem.

Can any of you think of any solutions, real or imagined, to the above? Do you have any new problems in live performance for us to peruse?

Lets help solve this issue in the world of live performance, and let our idols get back to performing their yacht-underwriting classics without fear.

What's James Browm going to do when Maceo Parker dies or has his lips burnt off in an explosion?

(great thread BTW)

I also worry about people who are only famous because they appeared in somebody else's song - not like Dido who has gone on to have fame of her own, but you know what I mean.

One hit wonders - fine - they can do the cabaret circuit and there's money in the bank. But take Wanda Dee of the KLF - all she did was say "I wanna see you sweat" a few times.

Also, what does Eminem do when the Dido bit comes along in his song, but she's off getting an award or something? Do they put her record on instead?

Yep, you see it on telly when he's doing concerts and she's not there. When he played Britain a few years ago one of the other raps (member of D12??) did it.

And what is Bruce going to do when he shouts:

Give me a C
Give me an L
Give me and A
Give me an R
Give me an E
Give me an N
Give me a C
Give me an E

And du to eating one fried chicken too many, the saxophonist is no longer Mr Clemons?

Yep - one of the 4 that all look the same. Wasn't Eminem or the big guy.

Come to think of it, it could have been any random rapper. Just had the big guy on stage so presumed. Definatly sounded like a rapper though (complete inability to actually sing - just kind of chanted the words). Only time I've seen the other guys is on the 'My Band' video and when it was one of their funeral's the other week.

You may have guessed I'm not the worlds biggest hip hop fan.

Or Barry Mannilows "Could it be magic" the chorus bit I think.

He sings "come...... come into my arms".....sounds messy
"So spin that wheel, cut that pack!
And roll those loaded dice
Bring on the dancing girls,
And put the champagne on ice"

The bit in The Monkees' Last Train To Clarksville that goes 'nanananananananananananana nanananananananananananana'.

It's too fast to sing at the intended speed.

I am available to all great artistes to perform those "missing bits" whenever they need a great singer like what I am, for a very reasonable fee! :D

What about the organ solo bit in DelShannon's Little Runaway?
