New Restaurant
New Restaurant
just had neighbour notification through the door -
An Application is being made to City of Edinburgh Council by Derek Wallace and Louise Gladstone for planning permission to change the use from take away to family restaurant and coffee shop with full class 3 use, repaint front to cream colour.
On attached map it looks like its the Chinese on the High Street, just beside La Vie en Rose.

It's been up for sale for a wee while. It used to be a sit in Chinese restaurant a long time ago. Always thought the space was a bit wasted now. Wonder what the BB, Sizzlers/Select and St. Andy's will think of that? And we REALLY need another eatery after all
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!
Do you mean the Seaview, Sandra?
Another restaurant may not be a bad idea depending on what it is.
I was stopped by some American tourists recently asking if there were any seafood restaurants here as their B & B owner (town centre) told them there would be loads here.
I felt a bit emabrrassed saying "no".

I think we do, there's plenty of takeaways and cafes, for during the day, but not many actual sit-in restaurants.Epykat wrote:And we REALLY need another eatery after all
And, does anyone know if the BB is still doing it's Fri/Sat night menu - hasn't looked open very often when I've wandered past walking the pooch.....?

We'd hoped to take my folks when they were next over. Might have to go and ask. Its a shame as it was quality at reasonable price and BYOB.impossiblevoices wrote: Mrs IV and I had a meal at the BB a fortnight ago - very good it was too - but when we went to go back last Friday, the place was shut...
I've tried on thre occasions to get a table there, only to be met by un-enthusiastic replies.Try taking a couple of kids in there and it's almost impossible.Porty wrote:Is it just me or has sizzlers been/looked very quiet of late? My own opiniion, based on my most recent visits, is that they are pricing themselves out of the market here in portobello.
I'll not be trying again.
Im gutted to hear that Franck. We spoke to the artist formerly known as Sizzler a couple of weeks ago. He has been absent from the biz for almost a year having had a heart issue. he is hoping to make it back soon.Franck wrote:I've tried on thre occasions to get a table there, only to be met by un-enthusiastic replies.Try taking a couple of kids in there and it's almost impossible.Porty wrote:Is it just me or has sizzlers been/looked very quiet of late? Has anyone else spotted Xanadu in the location once occupied by Karens. Has she got married?

We went for dinner tonight to Reds. Derek and Louise who own and run the place are great, really friendly and enthusiastic and Tommy, the Chef is very passionate about what he does.
We started off the only diners.... but others came in (not Ali and Nelson Hatstand, I may say - they just did some window shopping on the way to their Friday evening constitutional
).
I started with asparagus with poached quails eggs and parmesan, very crisp asparagus and lovely soft eggs - yummy and BC had Chicken, mushroom and brie pot pie which was very rich and creamy - delish.
I had chicken stuffed with Asian Haggis from Findlays - very nice it was too
It came with mashed tatties and a cream sauce with a dish of veggies on the side. BC had Fillet Steak on chilli red onion marmalade with handmade potato wedges, mushrooms and oven roasted tomatoes.
We finished with coffees. No corkage for wine (that same bottle Poppy
)
All in all I would recommend and I hope that they make a success of the business as they certainly put 100% effort into it.
Portobello online night out in Feb??

Reds were advertised in the Herald Mag today(Sun, 21.01.07):
"Reds, which opened in Edinburgh at the beginning of the month on Portobello's High Street describes itself as a child-friendly coffee house and restaurant. Family owned and run it aims to attract those with young families with a large soft-play area in a rear section and thoughtful, freshly prepared kids' options on the menu. Essentially a cafe by day it reopens in the evening from 5.30pm. Children are welcome at all times, though the food for adults is serious - with suppliers including local butcher Findlays. For now, BYOB operates and its open seven days, 254 High St, Portobello 0131 669 5558"

Last night, having managed to get rid of our child for the night we decided to try out 'Reds' for ourselves. I'm pleased to say they are obviously doing well as they were fully booked when we turned up at 7.00 pm.
Fortunately, we managed to get the last table at 'Select', then went off to the 'Dalriada' for a few drinks and a listen to 'Loose Threads' an accoustic 'folk' duo (guitar and fiddle), who had the place tapping their feet, clapping and even up dancing at the end. They covered everything from traditional Irish tunes to Johnny Cash, The Waterboys, James and Gloria Gaynor to name but some
They were excellent. Book them again now please Terry!!

As mentioned elsewhere, we were the only diners at Reds last night, at least by 7:45 pm when we left. Just a blip hopefully because a child-friendly restaurant is a great idea and one that deserves our support.
First thing I noticed was that it was a bit cold. The large windows to the rear are in need of draught-proofing and the lack of fellow-diner body heat didn't help of course. Emily was happy though in the large soft play area, occasionally coming back to the table for a bite of her baked potato or a glug of apple juice.
Among the starters, the squid marinated in kiwi was unavailable, a pity as it sounded interesting, but I enjoyed the chicken and mushroom pot. Froglette opted for the 'Bovine Tower' of mozzarella and beef tomato, which was sadly lacking in parma ham but otherwise good.
The parma ham reappeared however in time for my monkfish parcels with mediterranean couscous. This dish was good if a little on the dry side. Perhaps a dressed side salad would have made a better accompaniment than the shared veg dish of potato, broccoli and carrots?
Froglette opted for the asian-spiced haggis and chicken. Its great that Reds are sourcing from Findlay's and, although I had reservations about this gimmicky-sounding dish, I have to say it works surprisingly well. The generous portion of chicken was beautifully moist and this is a big, rich, creamy, spicy dish that will warm the cockles of your heart and wreck your diet.
We will be back and hopefully not alone next time.

I had the chicken the time we went and it was delicious. Thought the veggies were a bit boring that came along with it. Give us more notice next time you're goingBob Jefferson wrote:As mentioned elsewhere, we were the only diners at Reds last night, at least by 7:45 pm when we left. A Disappointing Tuesday Night in Porty
To cheer ourselves up before going back to work after a long weekend, we dolled ourselves up a bit and headed out last night.
Being new to the area we hadn't yet tried Reds or Select, but have driven past them lots of times. We had driven past them at about 6ish and they were both empty, so walked along at about 8.30 hoping we would get a table in one of them without having booked.
We stopped at Reds first and looked at the menu. It all sounded fantastic and is byob! We popped back along to the shop, picked up a bottle of wine and headed in to enjoy a lovely dinner only to be told that they had stopped taking orders
Is it just us, or is 8.40 ish a bit early to give up on an evening?
We slipped the bottle of wine into aileen's handbag and tried Select instead. They had just had a large table arrive and so we'd have to wait at least 30 mins before they could take our orders. We didn't really want to have to wait an hour to eat so we picked up a take away at cinnamon and headed home.
Hopefully the next time we try to go to a restaurant in porty, we'll have more luck.

Not just you and it seems especially daft to turn away custom when you are trying to establish a new business.aileenandfearghal wrote: Is it just us, or is 8.40 ish a bit early to give up on an evening?

Re: A Disappointing Tuesday Night in Porty
Very silly, they can't be wanting it to be a "restaurant" rather a daytime cafe. Select was very busy when we went past with Bess tonight.Marya wrote:Not just you and it seems especially daft to turn away custom when you are trying to establish a new business.aileenandfearghal wrote: Is it just us, or is 8.40 ish a bit early to give up on an evening?
