Library - local history section

The local history section in the Library is a fantastic resource and one that I have only recently begun to fully appreciate. Along with bound copies of every issue of the Portobello Reporter there are several volumes of newspaper clippings, photographs and all manner of other items of local interest. Much of the credit for this collection goes to my sister in law, Lindsay Souter, who worked there until recently. Along with her partner, she was also largely responsible for the Library's local history website.

As I discovered today, time just disappears once you start reading. Did you know, for example, that Portobello was at one time being touted as the new home for Meadowbank Thistle?

Suffice to say, if anyone's looking for me over the next week or two you will know where to find me.

Pity that didn't happen.... it would have completed the circle. Football first came to Meadowbank in 1936 when Leith Athletic moved their home ground from the Marine Gardens, Portobello, to Meadowbank.
