My anti-virus protection just reported that it had blocked a "portscan" attempt on my pc...what does it mean :?

Don't worry. It's just your firewall doing its job.

Real hackers aren't interested in your machine. Stupid kids who know no better, though, sometimes download programs that look for security holes on computers by going through enormous lists of internet addresses (every PC on the web has one) and seeing if any of them have potential security holes.

It's a bit like some nyaff going down the street trying car door handles. Yours was shut and he moved on - it wasn't anything personal.
