I'm not so sure that they are robots. I suspect that in this case they may be real people who spend their days in front of PCs searching for forums to sign up to and annoy the members with their garbage

Thankfully they only rarely go to the next stage of activating their accounts and then posting something.

Er...my fellow administrators and moderator types have decided to have a wee break from all this gossip and tittle-tattle - yes, that's right - I have all the power

...as usual really, but I have to let them think they have some too...

- but since I do have a life outside POL, I am relying heavily on our techie folk to do all the deleting new members and that kind of thing. Normal service will be resumed shortly, when people who can be bothered with all that sort of thing decide to come back to planet POL.

Scorpion, I think you are right. This is a fairly recent phenomenon and it's very tiresome having to delete these accounts and ban the email addresses, where practicable, to stop them from re-registering. I've got rid of a few and I'll get round to the rest of the junk accounts over the next few days.
