There's that place opposite the doctors surgery (forgot its new name), Kings Balti, Kings Manor, although I'm not suggesting anyone will suggest the Dalriada.

The tennis club could be a good option. My experience of people bringing along food is very good. In the build up to the event, there is inevitable posturing as ego's get involved and a kind of 'cook off' follows. It's great 'cause we'd all eat like kings for little money.

However if numbers are low this option could prove problematic. For starters there is the atmosphere difficulty if there is say only 8 or 9 people, we may spend a lot of the evening clearing our throats. Much better to be tucked in the corner of a cosy and full pub with the background chitter chatter and merryment.

If there are low numbers there is always the nightmare social scenario of only one conversation going on. It is essential to reach the tipping point where break off chats happen spontaneously. The one conversation scenario always lends itself to be dominated by one person and in the tennis club there would be no escape except going to the toilet a lot. I think here it is likely that Porty would take advantage of the captive audience to start a never ending monologue about his 'life experiences' and connections to the Portobello underworld. the pub scenario would offer us all a way out.

I currently favour Option C, but more info would help.

I feel i should also suggest Diner 7 in leith. I know Foxy and PoP have been with their families and its excellent. i was telling Sandra and BC about it too.

It is probably one of the best value restaurants in Edinburgh and would be great for a POL do. Having had second thoughts. I voted against my own Tennis Club idea but i'm more than happy to organise if most others are keen.

You're clearly still relatively new to POL get togethers, G. There is no atmosphere difficulty with small numbers as everyone (except me, of course...) is extremely pleased to have fewer people to share the drink with. And they're usually too busy drinking to worry about the conversation!

This year, it seems we can't decide

As its that time of year when everyone is paying out for pressies, work nights out etc. I think we should do the Porty Pub Crawl.

Here's an idea. Everyone meets up for an aperitif - for the pub crawl group this is the meeting point and first pub, for the meal group this is the staging area before moving off to eat.

When the meal is over, one of the eaters contacts someone from the crawl group and the two groups meet up again.

I prefer to go out together since the idea is of a social. Unless some people are having cake and thers aren't - in that case I'm off with the cakesters...!

Oh crikey. Once there's an option number that's being backed by PoP, Porty and the mods, the writing's on the wall for the other options.

I'm off to form the P-RAG pro-restaurant action group for people that eat solid dinners.

Well, St John's are going to wait until the last minute to see which way the majority are headed...

Cant' speak for PHS!

I didn't back drinking with no food. I prefer solid dinners. I believe most POlers really should have something to soak up the copious amount of alcohol they consume!

Mmmm...wheat crunchies. Best if you suck them till they go soggy. Not a KP fan but back in my northern town (Life in a northern town...now who sang that?), my blue bols and lemonade (dead classy, me; sometimes it was taboo and lemonade, for a change...) had to be accompanied by the classiest food of all...Pork Scratchings. Or by some seafood from the fish man who used to come round all the pubs. I got a shock when I got older and went to the big city, and people thought I was making it up that the fish van used to come round the pubs selling cockles, mussles (don't sing) and crab sticks. I thought they were making it up that people came round the pubs selling roses...what's the point of that? Thorns get stuck between your teeth and they're not very satisfying.

I'm new round here, and certainly from the point of view of coming along to meet new people, a trip down the pub would be more sociable than sitting round a big table. You do always end up only talking to the people beside you - which I'm sure would be great anyway, but still a bit of a shame.

By the way - I think it's fab that this is even happening (if an agreement is reached!), on top of the fab POL, Beach access and possible new sailing club. My hubbie and I are so glad we have chosen Porty as our new home.
