What would you change?

Post by Porty » 10 Jun 2004, 19:07

If you could change things in Porty what would they be?

I would like to see PHS kids in full uniform.
I would like trams or a little train service to run along the prom.
How about a Florida Keys style development across the bay? (Is the water too deep?)
I want the refreshment room back.
I even miss the Kiosk that used to be located at the foot of Belford Street.
I would raze the Jet Station it has to be more depressing than the Laundrette.
Speaking of which; STOP SMOKING. You would do more business.
It would make sense to clear the HIgh Street of Litter after School lunchtimes.

I would like a coffee shop on the prom that stayed open through the evening. I want <whisper it here, the place is full of Socialists> a Starbucks!

Great idea but IMHO Kitchener's serves the best coffee in Edinburgh, you have to get a takeaway cup as the stuff goes cold in those godawful China cups they use.
I didnt realise Socialists dont go to Starbucks. So who are all those retards that I see in there?

A little bird (or was it a big scary seagull) told me that that is supposed to be happening from next session - august 04 onwards. A little puzzling since it's supposed to be a violation of human rights to impose school uniform, but that's what i've heard - school uniform for all next year.

They are people with more money than sense who seem to think that drinking coffee in Starbucks will somehow make them cool or something. My favourite coffee place is just around the corner from Chambers Street on North Bridge. It's owned by a very friendly Tunisian guy. He has great coffee and charges £1 to takeaway any kind of coffee you want. I no longer work in Chambers Street but I still make a detour to visit him.

You will be pleased to know that full school uniform, including shirt and tie, is to be introduced at PHS from August.

A coffee kiosk will be installed as part of the Paddling Pool re-development plan. Check the link from that thread to the planning application.

No smoking - you get my vote on that. I think restaurant goers should get together and boycott restaurants that do not have a complete ban on smoking. In fact, I would go further than this. What we need is a Porty-wide consumer group to boycott shops that sell alcohol and cigarettes to children, shops that sell pocket-money replica guns, Pizza Hut, pubs that have Saturday afternoon karaoke. And another thing... (muffled cries and the smell of chloroform)

Looks like bob and i were posti8ng at exactly the same moment there - which is why i appear to be unable to read! Or maybe it's the medication kicking in (see football thread -or no, actually, don't!)...

You're probably right that it can't be imposed, but I think PHS will be actively encouraging it and looking for parental support. Every kid is getting a free tie as an incentive. In fact, the main reason it is happening is because parents have asked for it. I've always had an anti-authoritarian streak but as a parent I think uniform is a good idea. No football colours, no competing with designer labels, no arguments about what to wear. And it does look smart.

I wear uniform at work. It's easy - I get up, I stick on my uniform and best of all, I don't have to pay for it.

How about a few decent restaurants... Rather than a million takeaways!

Uniformly accepted it seems. Good news about the Coffee Kiosk too.
There is not much wrong with Porty in fact its a great place to live.

I wonder if we will ever see a good restaurant here? The attrition rate for restaurants is something like 80% and it would be a brave/stupid person to invest in Porty.

I would like to see some form of affordable family houses. Many people from porty can no longer afford to live here.

A bookshop would fail. We used to have 3 record shops and now Dave Allan is a bloody Traffic Warden. How sad is that? No offence on Dave but he was a real enigma and one of the characters of Portobello. He deserved success.

Incidentally, I once walked along the High Street from Pittville to Kings Road and I counted 28 places where one could get takeaway food. It was almost 20 years ago, I bet there is more now.

It's the web what does it... At one time, I used to spend a fortune in bookshops/record stores. These days, it's so much easier to log on to eBay or abebooks, pay a bargain price (or a huge price!) and wait for the postman. Result: I have a load of scarce books/records that are difficult to get hold of, but I spend a fraction of the time browsing in shops that I used to... And it's the browsing that lead to the impulse buys that keep the store in business.

In fact, the only place I browse regularly these days is Fopp... their bargain CDs/DVDs are a steal.

Starbucks would be cool. Also a really nice bar/restaurant which isn't a Chinese would be good.

I agree that somehwere to get a nice coffee of an evening would be a very welcome addition. It could also serve alcohol and nibbles

I remember Dave's shop well from my youth when it was at the top of Regent Street. I bought my first single in there (Roy Wood and Wizard - Forever). It was a brilliant shop

I believe that was the secondary location for Dave's shop. It was located along past the police station for a while. Jerry's hairdresser was also a record shop at the time.

I think there is to be a coffee kiosk as part of the development at the bottom of Bath Street too.
I felt a decent coffee house would be a good attraction even on cold days - decent food and drink coupled with a fantastic view.

Yep I remember that too! I think it was about where the Chinese is now or maybe one or two along from that.
When there was a record shop in Jerry's hairdressers you could hire out the back shop for a disco! :lol "We will rock you" by Queen springs to mind on that one

Dont know what anyone could have against Starbucks? £1.65 for a grande black coffee ,which is delicious, especially if one avoids the filthy Fairtrade stuff. Ive just been there. Bob dylan, Stevie Nicks, James Taylor and other super sounds. Reading the Times , observing the eye candy it doesnt't get much better on a dreich day like today.

$$

1.65 for something which in reality costs a few pence... Portobello's got a few decent locally owned cafes that at least end up putting the profit back into the community (well you know what i mean).

Plus, their coffee is pish - bitter as hell! But that could just be lack of training etc...

The overheads are more than just a few coffee beans... There's staff wages, rent and rates, shop-fitting... £1.65 is a fair price for a fine cup of coffee, drunk in an unhurried atmosphere.

Yes, Portobello has some fine locally-owned cafes. I want a Starbucks as well, not instead.

Please stop this. If anyone working in the Blue Bean reads this and realises that there are people who think £1.65 is a fair price for a latte, they might be tempted to put up their prices.

On Lothian Road, on the same block as the $tarbuck$ on the corner that used to be a bank is a takeaway which had a sign outside saying "savebucks - latte £1.00, cappucino £1.00" - i'm not sure if the sign is there but they still do cheap lattes for takeaway

wangi - it is bitter, isn't it? coffee of the day, that is.

I remember a conversation I had with Janet Fenton, who runs Evergreen. She said that they were thinking of opening a small cafe inside the shop and I said they should get some takeaway cups for people like me who like a latte.

You should have seen the shocked look on her face as she patiently explained that, in Evergreen at least, they recycled everything and that I was welcome, however, to bring my own mug if I wanted a takeaway coffee.

Although that's not as much of a political faux-pas as when someone came round to my flat to collect a pile of "Stop The War" leaflets and found me making a model kit of a tank.......

I take your point, Alex. I can't say I really have an opinion either way, it's just that Costa's hazelnut syrup is so much better than Star$$$$$ and if I was forced to state a preference, I'd go for Costa.

.
Too late I have two family members who currently work in the Blue Bean Cafe.

Latte is a lot more than £1.65 in Starbucks, although I never drink the stuff. As for the Blue Bean? I am a fan but I cant understand why the price differential between a regular and large coffee is so big? The measures are not.

As far as Im concerned Blue Bean and Starbucks are quite different places. BB serves really good food in a cramped environment. Rather incredibly they allow smoking, hopefully not for much longer.

SB serves good coffee which I ALWAYS have in a Solo Cup.
Solo Cups keep the Coffee hotter for longer and you can leave, taking your drink with you. Despite what the person from Evergreen thinks, HHUHA. Coffee is better from a properly designed takeaway cup. The little hole in the lid of a Solo Cup is the right dimension and shape allowing just enough air to hit the Coffee as you sip, creating the full flavour. Thats why most good Coffee shops, including Kitcheners, use Solo Cups. Its such a pity the choice of food is so poor and so expensive in SB.

[quote="wangi"]£1.65 for something which in reality costs a few pence... quote]

No!! In reality it costs £1.65. What's wrong with you? Let me help; please complete the Portobello 'reality price test' ()

An apple croissant to takeaway from Kitchener's costs 95p. How much is it in reality?

A Man's wet cut costs £12 in Shapes. How much is it in reality?

A tuna and red onion sandwich and soup, to sit in, at Blue Bean costs £4.75. How much is it in reality?

You can confer....

Entry price is 60p, which, is only 8p in real money.

And what is so filthy about trying to channel more of the money back to the producers rather than making bigger profits for multinationals? Do you have no principles? And while I'm at it would you like to spell out what exactly you mean by "observing the eye candy"? I think this could well be a wee bit offensive and derogatory but I look forward to your clarification.

I was referring to the taste, oh myopic One. Note the reference to 'delicious', which, you no doubt deliberately omitted to serve some self-righteous purpose.

You're not supposed to look at, or appreciate, good looking men/women these days! It's as dirty as smoking I've heard! Eyes forward!

Seriously, I buy this as a better argument on your side for going to Starbucks, rather than the quality of the coffee!

Thanks for this tip Marya. I'm sure Graham Kitchener will be delighted.

To redress the balance, here's another tip on cutting out the middle-man. The gammon steaks and some of the 'italian' sausage sold at Valvona and Crolla (with prices to match) comes from somewhere much more local (allegedly.)
