Surely you don't think a skatepark would be any more welcome here in Portobello? Look at the issues with Jet Skiers.

I'm serious. I don't know how big this facility is but I'm sure the Golf Course could easily accomodate it. A world-class, state of the art skate/bmx centre, maybe not in the centre of Edinburgh but on a frequent bus service. And situated right next to the largest secondary school in Edinburgh, so there's 1200 potential users for starters.

I find Porty a little less stuffy. If there is a suitable site for a skatepark in Portobello, it would be a real asset for the area.

BTW I'm not disagreeing with you Bob but Gilo is being a bit over optimistic about a skatepark being more welcome in porty. Look at powerleague, jets skis they are treated like a cancerous growth.

I'm sure I saw a post recently that compared the planned dinghy park as being equivalent to living in Barlinnie!!! FFS>

The skatepark debate is just another example of people who revel living in a great city, love traveling and being told how wonderful Edinburgh is but put anything slightly unpalatable anywhere near their hoose and they scream blue murder.

Its not edinburgh you dislike Gilo. Thats like saying you hate marks and spencer cos their chocolate covered gingers give you indigestion. Its the CCG's you dislike.

Could it fit in the bit of wasteland/forrest to the right of where the golf shack is at the moment? Thats a sunken area and not too near any houses.

I think you're right. Anything half exciting that encourages activity, imagination, skill etc. and that supports pro-social interaction would indeed encounter a barrage of objections from MOBs.

Not sure where you mean, but if you were to push the skatepark right up to Stanley Street then I think it would be far enough away from housing for noise not to be a problem.

I thought the proposed skatepark was smaller than a football pitch. 35x70m or something like that.

On your image you can makeout the edges of some regulation size football pitches that'll be at least 45x90m.

Your arithmetic may be suspect.

So, something more like this then? I can't believe that anyone would object to this. It takes up a tiny part of the Golf Course and is well away from housing. If this space is to become of better use to the whole community then I think this would be a really good component.

All this faffing about over a skatepark in Edinburgh. At least it would be constantly in use ... considering the HUGE waste of space that is a hardly travelled on golf course.

I'd like to see a skatepark north, south, east AND west ... kids today are barely catered for with what they LIKE to do in this city!!! Yet golfers have a surfeit of courses for them?

... and there's an outcry over ONE wee skatepark??? How many kids roam the streets with their skateboards, compared to the old and stuffy farts on the golf course??

We were through in Glasgow in the summer and went to Kelvingrove Park to find ice cream. There's a small skatepark just off Kelvin Way and we spent about an hour just watching the skateboarders and BMX'rs. Some of them were superb.

I think a skatepark would be a great thing.

I'm going to stick my basketball/5 a sides sports arena on next and turn the Golf Course into a city-wide centre of excellence for yoof sports/culture.

Much as I was against the Superstore and backed PCAT's campaign there, I get the impression that the campaign's success has had a downside in that it's encouraged NIMBY-ists to shout all the louder in the hope they can get the same result.......and this decision seems to have backed them up.

PCATS was a classic case of NIMBYISM.

I can't see any difference between those appalling, smug, self-satisfied, grinning, anoraked, middle-class, Inverleithers pictured in the newspapers the other day and those who rallied outside Portobello Town Hall during the PCATS campaign.

Nobody from PCATS was ever seen drumming up support in Mount Lodge or up in the Christians. Instead they were having strategy meetings over coffee in Kitcheners or whilst queuing up for some of Joe Finlay's exotic sausages.

I'd like a school with playing fields. These would off course include footy pitches, but also an athletics track and judging by the cricket score, a cricket square. I'd want the scatepark and the cool basketball/five aside pitch. If there's any space left some shrubs 'n' stuff.

Could you mock it up so I could have a look?

Porty, if you were faced with the prospect of an open view over a low wall and shrubs being replaced with 2 six foot fences and the equivalent of a car park with masts you might be a bit miffed
