Jet Skis and Speed boats

Post by maureen mclaughlin » 15 Jun 2004, 13:39

I was wondering if I am the only porty resident who is sick to the back teeth of the noise polution, from the the unwanted jet ski's and speed boats. I am resident at the bottom of King's Road and this has been an issue for many years. I read in the paper that locked gates were being installed but as yet the gates have not be fitted. I am not against peaple having fun but I dont understand why they are allowed to make so much noise in a built up aria. There is after all a long cost line. On Sunday we had aproximitly 6000 plus people run along the promenade (which was greart). You would not have none they were there but an hour or so later we had two jet ski's which went on to make noise for the next four or five hours. This cant be right? What are other veiws. maureen

Maureen, are you seriously suggesting that the River is a built up area? You can choose where you want to live, water sports enthusiasts are restricted to water. Live and let live is my motto.(for today)

Porty, Live and let live is my moto too! but I think you are a bit wet behind the ears if you realy believe that the only access to the Firth of Forth is by way of King's Rd. I have suggested to my neighbours that we move house as our rights are out numbered and out valued by 12 or so water sports enthusiasts. Geography is not my strongest subject but I am pretty sure that there is continous reference to the planet (earth) being coved by 2/3 water and 1/3 earth. Also in case you dont know Britain is an island. We are surrounded by water, plus there are mainy rivers, lochs and lakes in land. So run past me again why the need to have access to water can only be achived by way of Kings Rd.

I started a thread about this very subject last month but it seems to have slipped onto page 2. I agree with you entirely. It really annoys me that a few people have to spoil the peaceful, quiet, pleasant, simple beach atmosphere. There's loads of space going west of King's Road. Why can't they zoom off towards Leith. Or is posing in front of as many people as possible the main attraction? Oh the delights of boys and their toys.

How does that one go?

Maureen, can you point out to me where I said the only access to water was Kings Road?

Are you suggesting that

a) we should prevent jetskiers etc using the River?

or

b) shift their focal point along the prom to the posh end?

Where is the live and let live in that choice?

I like the sound of people enjoying themselves on the beach. I don't like the mechanical buzz of jetskis. I particularly dislike the way I've seen them plough through birds. Such as duck familys where the older ones are able to get out of the way. And I think I see less of the young.

.....the jetskiers aren't giving much thought to the residents.

Maybe Lawrence could incorporate a watersports club into the new community centre he's hoping to build where members and other water users would be encouraged to follow safety guidelines. A beach safety team could ensure that watersport users only use designated areas to launch their crafts, not exceed the speed limit until they get past a certain point and or venture into prohibited areas (used by swimmers etc).

Maureen, I was teasing. I really hope that the Jetskiers etc dont impinge on your life too much. The Kings Road end of the prom has changed a lot in the last 15 years particularly with the removal of the Power Station. All in all I would say its better but of course I dont live there.

Although of course just because "we" live on the front it doesn't give us the right to tell others what they can and cannot do there. It's a shared resource.

Thursday night Portobello beach. Sun going down. Gentle sea. Heron sitting on the groynes.

And what is the sound track to this idyllic scene? Waves gently lapping? Happy dogs frolicing? Seagulls calling?

I'm afraid all of these were overpowered by the roar of 2 jetskiers and a motor boat. I know everyone has a right to be there but I can't help feeling they could exercise a bit of consideration. I don't suppose the people concerned will read this but if anyone knows them perhaps you could ask them to come down to the beach without their jet skis one evening and see what a lovely scene they are ruining. Or perhaps tell us what evening they're not going to be there and I can plan my evening walks accordingly.

Ok stop moaning and lets get some action. Let me be the first to say that as for now I will not Jet Ski at Porty Beach on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday Evening. Its a small start I agree but at least its a start.

Can't we also get a ban on the use of power tools before 5pm on a Sunday between Coillesdene and Seafield Road? They're doing my head in! :?

I would not be seen dead with a power tool and that goes for a mechanical tool too. Anyone that knows me knows I dont do tools.I have never been to B &Q, I am proud to say.

My mate at work has a second job at B & Q.

For their training they have to go to the "B&Q-niversity"

That isn't a joke. It's what it's called.
