Hazard for cyclists on Fishwives Causeway

Post by kevin » 15 Jun 2004, 14:29

:x
Cyclists using the route from the pedestrian crossing on Harry Lauder Road heading to town should be very cautious when approaching the entrance to the Scottish Power site.
Although road markings clearly show that traffic coming from the pedestrain crossing direction has right of way as it's marked as a bend in the road ,many delivery lorries and royal mail lorries just drive stright into the site ignoring the fact that's it's a bend and have narrowly just missed me.
The priority should be altered to either show the approach from the pedestrian crossing as a give way line or put warning signs up for traffic entering and leaving the Scottish Power site.
I'm now very cautious at this entrance but not all cyclists will expect traffic to drive through the bend and into the site.
Be warned.........
Kevin.

Fishwives Causeway

Post by Gemini » 16 Jun 2004, 12:07

The Posting from Kevin regarding the Dangers for Cyclists using the designated 'Cycle Route' on Fishwives Causeway - Highlights 'again' the inability of the City of Edinburgh Tranport Department /Local Representation to control the traffic in this particularly 'car/lorry dominated area' for Cyclists/ Pedestrians and the residents of Baileyfield Road who use the Causeway to access the Local Shops in Porty.
But of course 'this is business'!! and that unfortunately appears to be more important!!

I posted the same issues on the site on '2nd June, 2003' - one year on the situation has deteriorated further due to the Council Planning Department allowing the 'SP site' to be be utilised for ..... yes more vehicular activity.

I think you are in 'quotation marks' overload. Maybe you should go and see 'someone' about 'it' '.'

Is it possible that the complete absence of Fishwives from the Causeway is a direct result of the hazardous cyclists? Just a thoiught.

Hazards on the Causeway

Porty - you are confusing me with someone who gives a damm about your smart (not) remarks.

Porty, I have to advise you that it is generally considered impolite on discussion fora to criticise others for spelling or grammatical errors. Besides,

Point taken but I wasn't pointing out errors simply over use of quotation marks. 'My Bad'

Fora?

It's not a criticism, you understand. I have no idea whether you're right or wrong. But it is funny.

Alex, I must confess that this is a word I have never particularly liked and have tended to avoid. I have good cause to now, having just read the following:
forum When this word means 'place for discussion', its established plural is forums. The Latin plural fora is now increasingly used, especially by academics, but it is rather pretentious, and it is frowned upon by many (not all) usage manuals. However, when forum is used in its ancient sense of a Roman marketplace and site of public business, the plural is always fora.

I find it rather amusing that on National Cycling Day, in a thread about cycling, the only thing related to cycling today was the backpedalling!
<grin>

BTW Alex, dear, you've changed dramatically! Have you given up on the demon drink?!

Again, as with the criticism by Porty on the Peace ...Iraq thread, this seems to be about superficial issues when the thread is about the very real threat to cyclists in this area, due to very heavy traffic. I think Kevin was pointing out a serious point and it seems a shame that Porty chose to divert attention from this. Perhaps some more cyclists would like to join in this thread, or other residents, who are concerned by the increasing heavy traffic including car transporters, petrol tankers, huge refrigerated lorries etc coming along Seafield Rd around the HL roundabout and along the HLRd, and often getting lost and going along Porty High St, up Fishwives Causeway etc. This is the background to the Superstore Plan.

If this thread helps cyclists and car drivers more aware of hazardous spots then that seems very useful - lets have more postings along the lines of the original......please

Ok sorry - I mixed you up with Wangi - as you seem both to like criticising style rather than content - again let's have more postings re cycling rather than grammar, or presentation, please.

I cycle this route twice a day, and to be honest this sounds like over exageration. Yeah, vans/cars may not be fully aware of the layout but they are going slowly and the cyclist can see them... Is it too much to ask that we (cyclists) show a bit of give-and-take and acknowledgement to other road users?

I used to cycle along Fishwives Causeway (oh no should "Fishwives" have an apostrophe? Am I going to get slagged off?) but I had to stop because it was being used as a dog toilet. At times it was absolutely disgusting. Particularly dangerous at night. I now go along Telferton instead.

What route would you take to go from Joppa/Portobello to the East End of Edinburgh (say Elm Row)?

I cycle the Promenade - Bridge St (or earlier onto the High St) - Fishwives Causeway - Portobello Rd - London Rd - Hillside Cr - Montgomery St - Brunswick Rd - McDonald Rd - Broughton Rd daily, but it's always interesting to learn what route others would take for the same destination...

Sounds like the most sensible route to me.

I will add my vote to the most dangerous thing on Fishwive's Causeway being the dog bombs littered along it .. sometimes I find myself thinking if I only had a polo mallet ... although the concept works equally well (on rubbish) with litterpickers (and receptacles for the litter) - it can actually be quite a fun team sport. Bike polo with a purpose!

Wangi

I resurrect you here a bit early, two days before easter...

I think its actually better to strike a right off Moira Terrace as soon as you are on it, go along Restalrig Avenue,Marionville Avenue,Marionville park,Marionville Road and go back to the main road at Meadowbank shopping thingy. You miss out all that Jocks Lodge hoo hah and diesel fumes and it probably doesn't take any longer. And your much less likely to fall under a bus as there are very few!

My complaint re the crossing is that it isn't like the one on Melville Drive on the Meadows, which changes immediately upon pressing the button. Could be done here too - there's no benefit to the traffic in making you hang around waiting for a green light.
