The view from our hotel room in New York. It was my 40th birthday. On the big day, we went to the downtown heliport for a pre-booked flight over New York. The place was full of FBI men. President Bush was coming, and all other flights were cancelled.
Bother.
The memsahib argued with the FBI man. "It's my husband's 40th birthday!" she said. The FBI man was unimpressed. "It's the president, ma'am", he drawled in return.

Cheers, although I wouldn't go that far!Porty wrote:Wangi, that looks gorgeous. You are one talented photographer.
I keep meaning to do something about my images... The two leading options are a pbase.com account (say 30-60 bucks a year) or a Linux box in the study at the end of the ADSL wire... The second option is the more costly but allows customisation and playing around with the website and database backend for a dynamic site... Hmm... I'm sure you can guess my day job!
Plus I want to splurge on a new camera... Hmm...
Alex, it's that sorta picture that makes people want to jump off high buildings! Would love to fly down that street! Highmare about the heli...
Bon voyage, Porty!
We are going to Paris for a long weekend in September - our 1st Wedding Anniversary! One of our wedding photos is still in the local photographers window, almost for a year now. We Honeymooned for a month in Peru which was amazing. I'll work out how to share photos on the forum and share some memories.

Epykat, I know what you mean. I personally don't mind people knowing my identity...but perhaps this goes against all the intrigue and mystery! Having said that.....I'm the one under the tree with the bronze frock on with the man in the Jacobian outfit. It was taken in Dr Neils Gardens at Duddingston Kirk last September. As you can see, I'm not known for holding back information about myself when asked!

Often wondered who these people are!!]

I think the intrigue and mystery are the best bit!
I've managed to work out who quite a few people are on here over the months and I dare say one or two have maybe worked out who I am! I think it's just dead funny that I might be standing in a queue in a shop beside somebody I have just totally agreed/disagreed with on here and we don't know it! However, now that we know what you look like you'll have all these strangers smiling at you in the street and you'll be left wondering if either a)they're from here, b)they're just being friendly in general or c) they've escaped from somewhere
I think the intrigue and mystery are the best bit!

Yippee! I'm on holiday! It's Portobello beach for me for the next two weeks, so let's hope the weather improves. Lots of little jobs to catch up on around the house and further afield. Need to make some progress with the website as well. Jane hopes to find time to design ranking images for use on the forum and we should have the new-look online version of the Reporter up soon.
Plan to fit in some walking and cycling in and around Edinburgh. Time to relax, read a few books and take some leisurely strolls along the Promenade. No need to pack and no flight delays. I'll send you a postcard.

Hey Wangi thanks for asking. It was pretty good. We went to 2 different part of Majorca both in the South it broke up the "monotony" of sun bathing. We had 2 rainy days, did no sight seeing, found a couple of good restaurants and a fantastic Gothic Bodega.
The highlight for me was playing Tennis at 8am last Thursday morning. I was playng on Court 2 and Carlos Moya was training and playing on Court 1 totally inspirational. The kids had a ball and for the first time we left our 18 year old daughter at home. We got back to a house that was in good shape so we can hardly ask for more.
Back to work wasn't to bad.Whilst I was away we moved to a new office on Porty High Street. Its not complete yet but it is looking superb. It was nice to return too.

If you ever decide to go, just be aware that the airline cannot fly over Greek Cypriot airspace so has to land at Istanbul (you sit in the plane while it refuels) then flies on to North Cyprus from there (basically an internal flight).
Can I ask your opinions on this though?
This is the 21st century, right? The world is a smaller place, right? Tourism, in general, widens our horizons, right?
So why will airlines, holiday premises, tourist companies, and above all, the English, only accept Bank of England currency?
We were humiliated on the plane trying to buy some duty free and only had a couple of Royal Bank tenners, and had to give back the booze 'cos they couldn't accept our money - I vote independence NOW!!!
I'm fed up being treated as second class, especially as we were sharing our trip home with a planeload of English people who didn't have a clue why our money wasn't accepted!
Anyway, we had a great holiday - saw the pictures in the thread - stunning! Looking forward to next holiday already!
Se ya!
We left our pets and house in the hands of an 18 year old too... Only scary moment was when he texted saying he was "having a few friends round for a drink"... But the damage is minimal, the animals were fed, and our friend said he loved living in Porty for a fortnight, especially as one sunny day walking our dog on the beach he was propositioned three times!Porty wrote:and for the first time we left our 18 year old daughter at home. And our holiday was great in spite of mixed weather. Glad you had a good one, Porty.

PS DG, I've looked at that pic every Friday morning on the way to toddlers and thought what a wonderful photo it is!

This happened to us last year at Tatton Park. I tried to pay for £40 worth with Scottish tenners and was refused! What made me even madder was the fact that the stallholder had a sign up saying..... wait for it....... "We Accept Euros" !!!! Needless to say he lost his salejimann wrote:![]()

We had two weeks in the Channel Islands where we had no problem at all using Scottish notes, but whenever we go to my family (Derbyshire/Manchester border), our notes are always refused.

We'd be better with the Euro or perhaps the American dollar!
This is just the tip of the iceberg -
paranoid as usual!
Actually, it depends how far south you go in England. No-one turns a hair in the North of England if you offer Scottish notes. England is not one homogenous place, and it's not just London. People in the regions are very different both from ecah other and from those who live in London.Epykat wrote:jimann wrote:![]()
