Can there really be any excuse given for this kind of behaviour?

Heroin addiction? Difficult childhood? None in my book. It is the fundamental distinction between right and wrong. Can someone like this be rehabilitated?

I hope he tries to burgle the home of a retired (but still very agile) boxer next (and final) time. Legal level of self defence and all that..

One of the actors in "Cocoon" was a golden glove champion. One of his stunts called for him to biff one of the staff at the retirement home - he got his distance wrong (due to a missing eye) and knocked the guy out.
