the role of moderator on the forum

Post by administrator » 04 Jul 2004, 20:49

I am grateful for the public and private support of forum members during the last few difficult days. The burden of responsibility involved in moderating the forum will now be shared between Alex, Bellybabe, Marya and myself with immediate effect. I remain administrator.

A number of posts concerning recent events and issues surrounding censorship have been locked. Any discussion of these issues should be posted here.

The moderators are preparing a set of posting guidelines, to be published soon. Amongst other things, this will set rules regarding posting external links.

This is your forum. Please continue to enjoy it.

Can the Surrealist be re-instated?

He is very contrite and promises to behave, and abide by forum rules.

I'd be keen to know on what basis you selected these other moderators.

Bob

Glad to see that 'moderation' is being shared.

It would seem that the forum is indeed growing as a result of recent events.

I look forward to reading future posts about our community.

This has got to be a positive step regardless of the methodology used to select the new Mods.

When you have serious concerns expressed about Administration from those responsible for more than a a 1/3 of the total posts, then I believe you have a problem. Perhaps the new Mods can keep this in check. The ill thought out deletion and locking of threads is getting out of hand. It diminishes the Forum.

Can you imagine a public meeting where a speaker said something that the Chair of the meeting did not like? So the Chair ordered the speaker to be taken out and shot.Thats not to far away from what has happened to the "person" that was Surrealist. He did not break any rule or any law. Neither did Justattackthem for that matter.

Whatever the new rules say? Surrealist should be reinstated as the rules have either not been clear, or as suggested above, do not exist.

Finally, I wait with bated breath to see the rules about posting links to other sites. I don't know of another site that has them. Anyone got a link?

Bob, good to see you've taken some of the comments on board.

I think i'll leave it at that now.

I prefer not to distribute the link to this but here's an example from a message board I have used. I would point out that it's just ONE example, of which there are many. Most forums (fora?) and messageboards have rules such as these.
BB

Messageboard Rules

The messageboard is a public area, which will be monitored on a daily basis.
Members of this service must abide by the following rules:

1 - You will not post any defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, obscene, profane, offensive, threatening, harassing, racially offensive, or illegal materials, or any material that infringes or violates another party’s rights of privacy.

2 - You will not engage in advertising to, or solicitation of, other members to buy or sell any products or services through the messageboard service, including Pyramid Schemes.

3 - You will not transmit any chain letters or junk E-mail to other members of the messageboard service.

4 - You will not post, distribute or reproduce in any way any copyrighted material, trademarks, or other proprietary information without obtaining the prior written consent of the owner of such proprietary rights.

Members’ messages may be removed if they are deemed in breach of the rules.

In addition the following message from Invision applies:
"Any user who feels that a posted message is objectionable is encouraged to contact us immediately by email. We have the ability to remove objectionable messages and we will make every effort to do so, within a reasonable time frame, if we determine that removal is necessary."

Thanks Bellybabe all we need now is a rule about external links. Plus we have to bear in mind that new rules or laws cannot be appllied retrospectively. At least not in any fair and just place.

You're welcome, but please be aware that was just an example of rules used elsewhere - I was not saying they are the rules here. I wouldn't want to mislead anyone!

Enjoy your holiday, Porty.

Thanks BB, I will enjoy, its unequivocal. I do understand that those are not the rules here but I tell you, they are not a bad basis. The place feels better already. :D

I too am interested to learn how the choices for the new moderators were made - shouldn't there have been a POLL?

All good points! It's difficult to make any response just now... we're still discussing a whole load of issues. Bear with us for a while.

For once I agree with Porty - reinstate Surrealist - I don't know what he is supposed to have done that was so bad as to ban him, but as one of the more amusing and interesting people on this Forum I can't think it was so bad as to do this.....can you really ban someone for breaking a rule when a rule isn't written down or made clear? Reinstate Surrealist please...and make things a bit clearer please....Moderatorati....

PS I'm a bit shocked at the goings on whilst I have been busy and not able to find time for the Forum

Carla, Porty - this matter has been dealt with privately and has been resolved amicably. I can't speak for Matthew, but I personally don't intend to make any further comment on this matter, which is now closed as far as I'm concerned.

Had to post a lot to make up for my upcoming absence - holiday starts tomorrow :-).
Catch you when I get back - or not, if you're away in the sun!

Fair enough and very glad to hear it. Hope Surrealist comes back soon, if he is not already.

Don't worry Porty, the artist formerly known as "Surrealist" now prefers to be known as "Dadaist".

In terms of comparison, if Surrealist was popular unintelligible plasticine children's animated character "Morph" from the show "Take Hart", then Dadaist is Morph's equally unitelligible but differently-coloured sidekick "Chas".

However, both Morph and Chas fell into line when Tony Hart beckoned - they were scared of being squashed.

And now it's time to look at some of your work. In the Gallery. (xylophone music)

Im glad that old model has been superceded ot at least retired for a while until Dadaist gets himself in trouble, as he surely must. :D

Tony Hart, now what was he all about? Im not very artistic but I remember being a bit disappointed when the show came on but then I couldn't tear myself away. Didn't Morph move on to his own series? I seem to recall him him complaining in the tabloids that Hart was extremely manipulative.
