GREY/SILVER VW BEETLE STOLEN FROM OUTSIDE MY HOUSE IN JOPPA SOMETIME BETWEEN 4.30 AND 10.00 PM. IF ANY HAS SEEN IT OR FINDS IT ( EVEN BURNED OUT

). PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

he insurance company might replace it but it was more the sentimental value the car has to me. My dad bought it when i was born or very young and he has put a lot of work in to doing it up so that it is still looks as good as new today. I have great memories in that car from my childhood.

Marya - i know... things like this always happen to me in two's. A few years ago i saw someone get run over i stopped to help and as soon as i got back in my own car (think i was still in shock) i crashed the car!!!

I was so shocked thought to hear about the violence in Bath Street between the 30 youths. I know the police are busy but surely if they know that this was going on they should have an officer or two patrolling those streets for a couple hours after they attended the incident to make sure that they didn't just come back.

Apparently car reported with lots of youths in it... stealing petrol from a petrol station in Dreghorn

The police have some well known and apparently prolific car thiefs that operate in Craigmillar and Portobello in custody at the moment.

Apparently our car was seen with another stolen car so they must be a big group of them!!!

No sign of the car yet though

Woohoo... car has been found

... in Penicuik

Not been reunited with it yet but its definetely not burned out and seen as the officers said we could drive it home once it has undergone police checks i assume that there is not much/no damage to the car!!!
Ah im so relieved!!!

I don't hold too much hope about this problem going away any time soon though!!!

This forum has really opened eyes to the things that are happening on my doorstep.

Great news, bl, you must be so relieved that it is still in one piece and hopefully not damaged at all.

My son's motor bike was stolen a couple of years ago and although it didn't have a huge amount of damage it was deemed a right off.

Glad to hear you got your car back - the wiring will likely be knackered but you can get that fixed. The psychological element of having had someone else drive your car and do god knows what in it may be greater than you anticipate though.

The only way this epidemic will ever come to an end is if the vermin involved start to wrap themselves round lamp posts in the vehicles they are stealing. I'm sure there would be mass mourning in Portobello should that occur.

Too Right!!!
Funny you should say about the wiring because a week before there was another attempt to steal this car. They got in to the car but could not get the started. After this the car would not even start with a key!!! God knows how they have managed to get it started.

It felt really silly getting so upset about this car so thank you for all your posts...made me feel less stupid!!!

Honestly Nelson, you just don't get it.

The violence which happens in the minds of "string 'em up" Jamesie and "hang 'em high" Wangi is entirely justified because it's righteous - and don't try to compare their imagined violence with the acts of the ruffians.

Their fantasies of castrations and car crashes are aimed at making the world a better place.

Also, don't complain to the mods. Apparently, wishing sickening acts of reprisal is a normal reaction.

My Dad had his Norton Commando stolen several years back and it was wrecked when it was found. It's not a very nice feeling.

Mr BM's mark II Capri was stolen in Edinburgh and we never heard of it again to this day.

We got the car back on Thursday. It did have quite a lot of damage the front and looked like it had been driven through some very muddy fields!!!

Funny you should say about you car never being seen again. As Portobello Police Station phoned on Thursday to find out whether we had heard anything about the car

They did not even know the car had been found!!!

I've also been shocked by the stories of theft and fights on our doorstep here in Porty, and it is great that the forum is keeping us informed.

Is there more we could do to help ourselves and each other? I can't help feeling that the best way to keep the community safe is to work together as a community.

What is the neighbourhood watch situation around porty?

Is there anything more we could be doing??

If I were you I'd just take heart from the fact that you haven't personally been involved in any of these incidents and be reassured by other posts that these sort of incidents come in cycles and aren't an indication that you have moved to a crime ridden area.

There are a number of neighbourhood watch schemes active in the Portobello and Joppa areas. Interested parties (I was one of them) tried to establish regular meetings, where we could gain from advice and the experience of others. The first few meetings started with enthusiasm but dwindled away until we were no longer meeting, partly because the Chairperson moved out of the area and partly because there wasn't enough to discuss on a regular basis.

We even hosted a private forum on this site to encourage representatives of the various Neighbourhood Watch groups to swap advice, but it lay unused and has recently been deleted.

Neighbourhood watch schemes also seem to have fallen out of favour with Police forces.

I'm so glad you got your car back

For anyone who has an older car, I cant stress enough to invest in one of these:

There rougly £70-£80, I used to have an old F reg fiesta, and they can be stolen inside a minute. Unless your car is stolen to order, these steering locks will deter your average scum who are looking for a quick royride.

Yippee... car was found bottom of kings road. Nothing damaged apart from the ignition. There was lots of things in it that were worth something and they were all still in the car too!!! Police still had to take it for forensics so had to pay £150 to get it

I can't believe this. Why on earth should you have to pay to get your own car back? Who did you pay this money to and how did they justify it?

Ridiculous isn't it!!!

Well my dad paid it but i think he had to pay at the police station and take a receipt to a garage in macmerry where they do the forensic tests!!!
Had to pay the same for the other car so £300 in the last few weeks just to get our own possesions back!!!. You can claim back from your insurance however it is not worth it as your insurance premium will go up because you have made a claim.

Forgot to say in answer to how they justify it is they didn't...that is procedure apparently and as i said before you have to claim back from insurance!!!

Oh well, at least it sounds as though they are serious about trying to identify the culprit(s).

When our car last had to undergo 'forensic tests' I was told to drive it down to Portobello Police Station where a very nice young WPC apologised for the lack of fingerprinting kit, dusted the car door and then tried to take the prints using sellotape.
