Earlier today I walked along the Prom from Bath Street to the Pumping Station. At the Bath Street end a large group of young Italians were playing football on the beach, barefoot and with some skill. The girls were lined up on the touchline cheering them on and it was a nice, happy Summer scene. At the other end a bunch of local kids were also playing football. They had chosen the entrance to the public toilets as their goals and were blasting the ball off a plastic panel, to the annoyance of other people. I politely asked them if they would like to take their ball on to the beach instead and received nothing but insolence and abuse in return. The matter was reported to the police, who currently have a caravan stationed at the west end of the Prom.

Cue Epykat I guess.

What am I? The Chairman of the local "Support a Teenager Group"? I don't condone kids vandalising things and being rude - whether they're Italian or Scottish!
I guess our lot were maybe more aware that it might be more than sand they'll find between their toes!!
And what did the Police do?

It's the sunshine effect. I've found on all my travels that the more pleasant the climate, the more tolerable and friendly the population. Cue the Italian reaction compared to the Scottish kids, faced with a generally bleak and overcast summer environment.

Oh I don't know... Some of these Itailan/Spanish/WhereeverMed kids are bad apples too. Watching them yesterday outside Waverley as they tried to cross the road on a red man - every car that rightfully turned left and almost hit them was given a good wad of gobbin'!

I remember being struck last summer by a group of young foreign students happily playing volleyball on the beach. Later they sang songs round a bonfire. Meanwhile local young people sat in a group a safe distance away looking rather disgruntled at the fun they were having.

I remember thinking - Wouldn't it be nice if they could approach them and all join in together? And the next day peace would spread all around the world.

Our lot were probably scared to have fun in case they got a row! I'm beginning to think Portobello's been invaded by alien adults who were born aged 25 (see previous thread!)

It's probably because Italians etc. are different to us.

They allow their kids to take watered down wine with their meal so their playtime is probably more fun!

Though when I was 15-17 my parents allowed me a half cider now and again - though could be the west coast thing....
