Bad news everyone, despite the efforts of the council to clear up the fishwives causeway footpath, some people dumped a huge amount of waste in the bramble bushes next to keyline builders sometime on saturday night. What a disgrace.
I've reported the matter to the area task manager at the council and they will range for it to be cleaned up.
I think a set of bollards at the west end of this footpath is needed to stop fly tipping on this part of the path.
I also noticed that a mattress had been dumped in the burn just behind the Figgate Burn behind standard life premises ,and also reported that to the council as well.
Dumped rubbish in Fishwives causeway
Fishwives Causeway
Hi Kevin,
you are quite right about the disgrace of Fishwives Causeway at Telferton
it has been used for fly tipping ever since I moved into Portobello 20 years ago. Hopefully Scottish Power's move across to Telferton from Fishwives Causeway (other side of Harry Lauder Road, - HLR) may, if CCTV and other security measures are implemented by SP deter fly tippers.
However, Fishwives Causeway at this side of Harry Lauder Road is much more of a dump! THE COUNCIL'S PARKS AND RECREATION SITE IS A COMPLETE AND UTTER DISGRACE'. Since the Construction of HLR subsequently turning Fishewives Causeway and Baileyfield Road into a cul-de-sac, the council have failed miserably in keeping their premises tidy. they have also failed miserably in implementing safety measures on the Causeway - with no proper signage to advise motorists , but more especially HGV drivers that when they pass the mini roundabout adjacent to Scottish Power's Fishwives Causeway entrance that they are past the point of no return - in effect the Drivers of heavy vehicles think they can access the HLR from the top of Fishwives Causeway, only to discover they can not!! the driver (because he has not noticed the samll t-junction signage on the inadequate wall at the top of the causeway) then think that he can exit Baileyfield Road at the Kings Road end of the street - which he can not ! so the HGV driver has to either try and do a u-turn on the street - which to date has resulted in the 'inadequate wall' being damaged (and left for 16 months until the council repaired it) or Scottish Power's Security Fence being demolished, but the more serious problem is when the HGV driver decides to reverse the whole way back along Baileyfield Road (which is incidentally used as a Car Park for Laidlaw Staff along with their customers - oh nearly forgot they also use Baielyfield Road to test out their vehicles for speed and roadworthiness/not to mention the tipping out of the assorted junk that one keeps in their cars)
anyhow the driver is negotiating reversing an HGV along a street where on one side the traffic is parked nose on to the pavement - and parallell on the other, it is a sight to behold! more especially when they reach the corner of the CAuseway and Baileyfield - cause there are normally transporters and Scottish Power HGV's parked there for one reason or another, my point in all this is, the Council apparently does not find it necessary to erect signage, unless of course you live on the other side of the block, where 'yes sir' 'rightaway sir' 'more flowers in daisy park sir'!!and the problem is taken care of immediately.
Apologies for sounding cynical, but the experiences the Residents of Baileyfield Road have endured since the construction of the HLR and Scottish Power's HQ, including the aforementioned and other issues of a geotechnical nature, all which incidentally have been advised to the Amenity Committee/Portobello Community Council/Councillors/City of Edinburgh etc etc etc. no one is remotely interested, the street is surrounded by industry on 3 sides and a Section of the Edinburgh City by pass on the 4th.
It will indeed be very interesting to discover what exactly the City Council proposal's are for the soon to be vacated Scottish Power Premises! and if anyone knows, perhaps they could post a message on the board and let us know!!

Proper signage sounds like a very good idea and might solve many of the problems encountered, particulary warning motorists that this is a cycle route and exercise caution.eg 20 mph signs, particularly as it is a cul-de -sac.
A Friendly word from the councilor to the Ford Garage might be worthwhile and also encourage them to do something to help the local community,eg install some litter bins around the garage area.
We picked up some rubbish last night but had to walk a long way before finding a in to put it in.
The same applies at our side of the Causway.
The council started to shift the rubbish which Io reported was dumped in the causeway yesterday which is good news.
Kevin.
Dumping at Fishwives Causeway
The dumping on the footpath has been cleared up (Tuesday 13th). I have also arranged with Network Services to have a barrier installed to restrict access to the footpath.
A number of leaflets with an address in leith were removed from the dumping which seemed to originate from a garage/car workshop. This information has been passed to the Environmental Wardens for possible enforcement action.

Just a quick word of explanation required here I think. Robert Davidson, who posted the previous message, is the Task Force Manager for the Portobello area (as you will see if you view his profile). He has responsibility for the cleanliness of all public spaces, including parks and the beach. I am sure his input to this board will be valued and we plan to give him his own section on the website in due course.
Dumped rubbish in Fishwives Causeway.
Robert,
that's great news about the barrier for Fishwives Causeway. This will certainly deter future fly tipping.
Thanks for your speedy response on this matter .
