Portobello Community Council

Hi,

I've had a look round the Portobello Online site and cannot find any information about Portobello Community Council.

Portobello Community Council was set up under the Local Government Scotland Act 1983 and there were 20 elected representatives and 20 registered group representatives.

At the first meeting of a new Community Council there will be elected from the members a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Treasurer and Secretary.
Those elected will hold office for the duration of the Community Council term of Office, three years.

Under the constitution, there required to be a meeting held every month with 15 members being a quorum. (1983)

Portobello Community Council represents the community of the whole of Portobello as defined in its constitution.

It's full council meetings are open to the public and anyone can go along to listen, however, if you have business with the Community Council you must address a letter to the Secretary and the Council will discuss your issue. Members of the public are not allowed to speak at Community Council meetings, unless invited to do so by the Council.

Copies of the Agendas and minutes of previous meetings are usually available in the library.

This is my contribution about Portobello Community Council but it might not be as up to date as current members could attest.

I would like to see a list of current elected members and a list of the group representatives and who they are representing posted here for everyone to see.

There must be someone who can post on the forum the current Agendas and place, date and time of the next meeting, and keep it updated.

I'll watch with interest.

The Community Council will indeed have its own webpages. Current minutes will be posted and there will also be an archive of previous minutes. Please remember that although you have access to the site it is still very much 'under construction' and there are lots of sections that we just haven't got round to yet. Current plans include photos of all the CC members (so you know who to blame!) along with pen portraits, info on how to get involved, constitution etc. Lots of work to do and just a few local volunteers trying to put it together with no money and conflicting demands of jobs, families etc. Thanks for your post and if you have any ideas for this section please get in touch.

Portobello Community Council

Hi Bob,

I fully understand that this site is still under construction.
I am also aware that the people responsible for putting this together have done a lot of work to get it this far, well done.

My intention with this topic was to outline the workings of the Portobello Community Council because I think there are people who are viewing and commenting who do not apprieciate the procedure for involving Community Council in local issues.

I was a founder member of Portobello Community Council and served for ten years as an elected member. A few years ago it was due to be disbanded and I negotiated with the City of Edinburgh Council Liason Officer, Mrs. Neta Sinclair to hold on to it for Portobello.

I am a believer in Portobello Community Council. I think it has under utilised power but it takes a strong community to assert that.

At no point did I consider my comments as a criticism of Portobello Community Council or indeed those who are constructing this marvellous site for Portobello.

Hi Bob,
Having read your post regarding the amazing amount of work the Porty Online Team have done in getting this Web Site off the ground, giving the Local People of Portobello the opportunity to air their greivances (some more than others - namely myself) Perhaps the Porty Online Team would be able to get some financial help from PCC/PAS ( after all it is a Local Community Forum) I believe that Lawrence Marshall is a member of some East Edinburgh Board that allocates finance for Local Communities (cannot understand why he did not advise you?) failing that, I am up for shaking a tin on Portobello High Street or helping to raise funds!
Anyone else who finds this web site a much needed tool for connecting to other Locals and have any ideas on how to raise obviously some needed finance - please let's get together and help.

Not sure about shaking a tin but I certainly appreciate the offer. I'm sure that we will find ways of raising finance for the site as and when this becomes an issue, whether it is in the form of a handout from the Community Council or through grant funding of some type. We made a decision right at the outset that we would not seek advertising revenue from local traders, not least since the local newspaper depends on this income and Portobello Online is complimentary to, rather than in competition with our friends at the Reporter. Recently however, we have considered the possibility of a corporate sponsor and I hope to have good news on this soon.

Time resources on the other hand are a major problem. Full time jobs and families mean that the time we can devote to the project is limited. Even organising meetings is difficult. If someone would like to finance our retirement we could really go places!

The best way anyone can help us at the moment is simply to tell others about the site. The forum is starting to take off and we need to let more people know about it and persuade them to take part. I'm hoping to get some business cards and posters printed up soon with the website logo and URL so that should help.
