Has anyone lost a cat?

We have taken in a cat that may be lost. He is mostly white and has a tabby tail. He ia a lovely affectionate cat and its to believe that he didnt have a home before we found him.

Thought about getting a vet to check him for a chip?
Dont know if they'd charge for that though
