Fish & Chip Teas

Post by Porty » 15 Apr 2008, 20:37

I was out for a drink two weeks ago on Friday, honest I was. And i met some old neighbours from Mountcastle who had been to the Montgomery Street Cafe for a fish chip tea and proclaimed it to be excellent.

And on Saturday I had a similar experience at The Tail End Restaurant in Leith walk. Its a high quality F&C restaurant (chippie next door). It only opened last Thursday and I went on Saturday for a fish and chip tea. Very nice indeed and they obviously have the air conditioning right, as one of us didn't smell of fish.

Where else is good?

Homer has noted a rather nice looking new chippy on Leith Walk. He says it's owned by the same folk who run the Anstruther one. Wonder if that's the one you visited Porty?

Yes that is the one. It is quality. They don't have a licence yet, so you can take your own. (they didn't even have a till) We took wine but the people next door had cans of Stella. They charge £3.50 corkage for the wine not sure what it is for Stella.

The presence of Stella in no way detracted from the experience, it was really good.

The best one in Scotland I ever came across was the one at the corner of Picardy Place and London Road, sadly now something else. Of course, my approval might be because I always had a fish suoper there after a night drinking in town, when I was waiting to catch a taxi on London Road, back to Porty. But I still remember it as excellent.

Others I remember are south of the Border - but they were superb (even one in north London!!!) (The others were in Whitburn, County Durham, and Hull).

The Peacock Inn, Newhaven. Well, at least it was the last time I went which is a couple of years ago now. Was much better than the Harry Ramsden's which used to be across the road from it. That's now a branch of the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar, which, if it is anything like the original restaurant, should also be good.

Yeah the Peacock is good, like you I've not been there for years. I met the owner in Majorca one year, she and her cronies subsequently joined us for The Eagles at Murrayfiled, which was another story altogether.

My brother (see "I am devastated") had a take away fish supper from L'Aquila Blanca in Stockbridge last night, an experience which will not be experienced in the near future.

The Anstruther chippy was brilliant. My mum used to live a few villages along in St Monans.
I read in the Hootsman at the weekend that St Monans now has a classy fish resteraunt must take a visit sometime and see where ( or sea where )

Epy and I are off to The Tail End this evening only for research purposes, then off to the cinema to see the latest Daniel Craig movie, also only for the purposes of research. .......

We went last Wed night Scoop. I had the langoustine, which were v.nice, though I did cast envious eyes at Homer's cod'n'chips fish dinner, which was a huge portion .

I also had a huge portion (so to speak!) which is why I couldn't finish my pre Daniel Craig's bum (which was also a huge portion) cocktail.......

Stopped off on my way home from Carlisle 1 Southend 2 at the Townhead in Biggar to console myself with some award-winning fish 'n' chips. Along with haddock and lemon sole they also offer pollock and hake. They were voted best fish 'n' chip shop in the UK in 2007.

VERDICT - both "Tail Ends" were yummy, but I think Daniel Craig's just pips it. What say you, Epy?
