Holidays

Post by SoupDragon » 29 May 2008, 10:50

Before my mum took ill my sis and I were discussing going on holiday together.
We've started to look around again.

In the past we've been to Lindos in Rhodes and Katelios in Kephalonia ( I went back there with Mr Soupy last year )

We were wondering about Crete this time, we'd like a quiet holiday.
Anyone got any suggestions?
( yeah i know Bob kinda paddled a bit there in the past )

Elounda in Crete is wonderful, still unspoilt built around a harbour with a small beach with mountains for a backdrop, get boat from there to the leper colony Island Spinalonga or a taxi ride will take you to Aghios NIcholias where you can get the ferry to lots of other islands including Santotini for the amazing sunsets one of my best holidays been to Greece over 22 times.... highky recommend it

Agree Elounda is nice, as is Aghios Nikolaos. They are both more up market (i.e. expensive) areas and at the East end of the island. However, at this end of the island you also get some of the more down market resorts; unless you are 18 and want sunburn, hangovers and sex I'd avoid Malia and Stalis like the plague. I wouldn't consider Hersonissos at the height of the season either.

We've visited Crete a fair few times and would always recommend the West of the island. Flying into Chania/Hania (rather than Heraklion/Iraklion)is best for resorts on this side of the island. Chania itself is a pleasant town built around an old Venetian harbour, that has restaurants and shops selling leather goods, pottery etc.

About 35 kms from Chania heading towards Rethymnon , you'll find the small village of Georgioupolis, which is a favourite of ours. It has a 9 km long beach, a river (with turtles), which leads to a freshwater lake and a harbour with fishing boats that still land their catch there. The main restaurants are centered round the village square that is tree lined and very pleasant. It is customary to eat your main course in one restaurant and then wander across the square to another for pudding, coffee etc. There are adequate shops - chemist, couple of supermarkets, gift shops etc - and easy transport links to Chania or Rethymnon for trips. There are also organised tours, which leave from the village square - the trip to the Samarian Gorge on the South of the island is one well worth doing.

If you hire a car there are some fantastic beaches with sandy lagoons on the far West side, though be aware that they are perhaps a bit too quiet ,so I wouldn't advocate staying there.

Although more hotels have sprung up in Georgioupolis in recent years, they tend to be strung out along the 9km beach, a fair distance from the village itself and their occupants tend to stay in their 'compound' for the duration of the holiday.

The Cretan people are very warm hearted and have a particular place in their hearts for anyone British - there is a British war cemetery on the outskirts of Chania that is impeccably tended by local people.

Whichever end of the island you and your sis eventually choose , Soupy, I'm confident that you will love Crete!
