Golden Days

Post by Chas » 30 May 2003, 01:00

As a business 'person' in Porty, I was very dissapointed to pick up a leflet advertising 'Golden Days' apparently taking place in less than 3 weeks time. Why has no one on the 'organising committee' bothered to approach local businesses looking for support or participation? Or is it to be like last year, a clique-ish 'do' for a few dancers looking for an excuse to cadge some public funding for their club?

Chas

I think your criticism is misplaced. Gordon Mackay deserves a lot of credit for masterminding this event. I have met with him on a number of occasions and I am always impressed with the enthusiasm and energy he has for ‘Golden Days’ and the time and effort he puts into ensuring its success. I don’t see many other people attempting to promote events in Portobello on this scale and I’m personally delighted that the Council is willing to help with funding anything in the Portobello area. ‘Golden Days’ may not be everyone’s cup of tea but it does not pretend to be a ‘Festival of Portobello’ and it would be unfair of us to expect the organisers to carry that burden. They have their own theme and their own agenda and since they are doing all the work we can hardly complain. What we need is a few more guys like Gordon with the vision and drive to make things happen. Festival of Youth anyone?

Sincere apologies Charles - We've realised that when we circulated shops and community groups up to 6 weeks ago we missed Brighton Place and the High St Nr Town Hall

Why has no one on the 'organising committee' bothered to approach local businesses looking for support or participation?
We have - 120 trader letters, 45 to community groups, regular reports to the community council and a short presentation to Portobello Rotary among the consultation carried out

Or is it to be like last year, a clique-ish 'do' for a few dancers looking for an excuse to cadge some public funding for their club?
No it isn't - if it ever was. We have volunteers from 9 community groups involved this year. Our office-bearers are all Porty people. The council initiated the festival idea and sponsored the event last year - no cadging involved. Just 1000 plus hours of unpaid work by a dozen volunteers.

However we will be holding a public meeting in early July to take feedback and form a new committee to run GoldenDays 2004. You'll be top of the invite list for that forum

Oh and I'll pop in for a chat this weekend
Kind regards and apologies again
Gordon

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's on Saturday 14 June 2003. And by co-incidence on the same weekend as the revived Edinburgh marathon runs along the prom.

We have recruited an event manager - Julian Grant. E-mail any ideas to juliangrant@quista.net

We are very keen to follow up on Bob Jefferson's ideas to build a strong Childrens programme. In addition to childrens theatre we are look to have a performance stage. Plus a host of interactive games, sandcastles, kiting, beach games. Someone even suggested a guider building competition !

Ideas to Julian please

Hi,

I learned about this years Golden Days event by watching this board.
(There is already a topic under this heading from which the above is taken)
The first mention was on 29th January, 2003, ample time was given for any person to volunteer to help.

I couldn't participate in the organisation of the event but I have placed literature provided by the organisers in prominent positions in Portobello.

Whether or not you like the theme of an event being organised in Portobello, it can only be for the common good of Portobello for residents and businesses alike, keeping the seaside alive!

Hi all
Just a note to wish all involved in Golden Days, the best of luck for a great day tomorrow, I hope the sun shines and there are a lot of happy faces on the prom.
Well done to all involved for giving up their free time to make this possible

Surely bad planning to have Golden Days on the same day as Leith's festivities. Anyone trying to get to Porty by bus will find Leith Wok and Duke Street closed to traffic while the parade is on.

Hats off to Gordon Mackay and his team for a fabulous success today. Our family had a great time and we met lots of people we knew down on the Prom. With plans for next year's event already well in hand 'Golden Days' has now firmly established itself as THE local event of the year. It was great to see more community involvement this year and I know that this is something that Gordon is keen to build on for the future.

We loved the classic cars, enjoyed a pint and a great set by Hi Voltage at the Bedford, reminisced over the vinyl offerings at the collectors fair and generally soaked up the atmos and the welcome rays of sunshine. 8)

It was great to see the Prom and beach being enjoyed by so many people. Hope you all enjoyed it too. It takes a huge amount of organisation and hard work to put on an event of this scale, so much so that Gordon already has a meeting organised to discuss next year's event. Congratulations to everyone concerned. Hope to have some photos of the event on the website soon. :D

Portobello Golden days.

:(
I'm glad the festival was a huge success on saturday however I was extremely disgusted at the state of the Promenade when I walked along it at about 8pm on saturday night.
Every bin was full and rubbish left lying around the bin or on the prom wall.
Thank god it wasn't windy or all of thgis would have been in the sea or on the beach.
I just hope that the council cleaned it all up before the Marathon runners came along the Prom on Sunday morning.Perhaps someone can confirm if this was done.
There has been much talk about the businesses along the prom and it would have been nice to see them doing there bit on saturday by either putting extra bins out for the empty burger rolls and chip papers that were left lying everywhere.
Where people meet in large numbers there will always be rubbish.Maybe next year and at any future future popular event on the prom, the council could have a mobile unit on patrol emptying the bins throughout the day and this will help impress on all that care should be taken with rubbish in a beach environment.
Kevin.

Rubbish on the Prom

Post by Susan » 19 Jun 2003, 00:44

Hi Kevin,

I can confirm that the Promenade and beach were in pristine condition on Sunday morning.

Another great job done by Robert Davidson and the Portobello Cleaning Crew!

I also saw extra bins being placed out but until there is a scheme such as you suggest with frequent emptying during busy days I think there will be a litter overflow situation.

There are always lessons to be learned and I'm sure that the organisers will have noted that there was inadequate bin provision in specific areas - outside the Bedford for example. On a more general point, as we all know, the number of visitors to the beach can vary enormously and I feel that what we need is a smarter, more pro-active approach which allows for extra temporary bins , especially at the weekend, when the forecast is for warm weather. I agree with Kevin that the traders also have to take some responsibility for the mess left by their customers.

A new batch of Golden Days photographs went up on the site today, taking the total up to 16. Thanks to Colin McBeth, Derek Miller, Archie Foley and Gordon Mackay for providing the shots that helped to capture some of the atmosphere of the day.

If you have photographs of local interest that you would like us to use on the site please email them to us at portyweb@blueyonder.co.uk.

Great to see as well that POD is generating a lot of interest and we wish them well for the launch. I'm always amazed at how many artistic and talented people have decided to make Portobello their home. What an interesting bunch we are! :D
