Flooding in Porty?

Post by Porty » 17 Aug 2004, 11:09

Excuse my ignorance on Geography or Topography but is Portobello ever liable to be at a risk of flooding?

The Braid Burn which we call the Figgate Burn or Figgy when it gets to Portobello does pose a flood risk. Lots of bumpf and maps in the libary. There were also a couple of planning officers willing to discuss the matter last year. Hope this helps?

No worries. Was just thinking about the 1953 floods and knowing the damage they done in East England, Zeeland and some bits of Scotland.

In particular was thinking about the damage done along the Moray Firth - I think there was a program on TV last week about it? I missed it... I've heard it had some pretty spectacular shots of the "high tide" at Pennan.

My folks have got a house in Gardenstown/Gamrie (just along from Pennan) and a whole section of the village (Seatown) was lost in those floods/storms!

In the 1970's a few of the garens at Eastfield fell into the sea. (Press Cuttings at the Library) There was a lot of dispute about responsibility, was it Crown land, was it the Council's. I can't remember the outcome.

There is a Geographical problem with where you live - due to it being above sea level.

One elderly Porty resident told me that there hadn't been any problem with the Figgate Burn until the Cameron Toll shopping centre was built - on land that had previously acted as a flood plain. :?

Not at the Botanics, but I managed to see it last year down in London when it was outside the Museum of Natural History. Was excellent.

However will go along to the Botanics for another look some lunch time before it gone - not far from my work.
