Normal conversation versus heavy debate

Post by bellybabe » 17 Aug 2004, 22:50

Is there something in the air, or am i being affected by all the political debate on the board just now?

Typical conversation chez nous:
"Kids ok today? How's the potty training going?"
"Huh. How was work?"
"Oh, um. Eldest's new teacher ok?"
"Dunno really. Seems it. New colleagues ok?"
"Dunno really. Seem it. Knackered though. New washing machine come?"
"Hah! Yes. Doesn't work though."
"Bummer. Bed?"
"Yeah. I'll just check the forum first. Night."
"You're addicted to that forum. Night."

Bizarrely, tonight the conversation turned into a rather heated debate, sparked by (now don't laugh) Woman's Hour (anyone hear it?) and calendars, and leading into whether poor people and survivors of trauma truly have freedom of choice in how aid (and awareness) is/are raised, and in whether they really have a voice. For example, since "a voice" in our country is usually considered to be through the democratic voice, do homeless people have a voice as such? And do latin american tribes, made homeless by the exploitation of companies such as Shell, truly have a choice about whether to accept aid programmes from the poeple who stole their land in the first place? A nude calendar is being used to raise money for what some call victims and some call survivors of genocide in Rwanda; is it appropriate to use nude pictures of women to raise money for survivors of rape, many ravaged by HIV/AIDS? Should we simply acknowledge the inherent good in trying to do something to help them, without worrying too much about propriety?

This is rather different to our normal conversation (since the second child was born, anyway). Is it the stormy weather?

Did you have the "Disable BBCode" option checked? Plus for pbase images you need to stick on the size and .jpg on the end... So:

is:

But since you've not gat a paid-up pbase account you can't direct link anyway ;)

I was very tired and grumpy by the time I tried. Today I'm even more tired and grumpy, so will probably leave it, but thanks for the tip!

Thanks!
Yes, I think the great debate was an adverse reaction to a weekend of inane polluting unnecessary train journeys accompanied by the greatest capitalist patriarch of our time...no, not Porty... Sir Topham Hat.

PS We even have photos of the great Sir T H himself but they include the children, and not in an arty, reflected-in-the-window sort of way...
