Gemini and others have raised concern about this. Some of you will be aware that this site (and the larger area encompassing it) is now regarded as a 'gateway' to Portobello and that the Planning Department of the Council has recently produced a 'Statement of Urban Design Principles' for Baileyfield. Lawrence Marshall sees this as:
'a really crucial opportunity to begin to knit this area back into the urban grain and community fabric of Portobello" and something which will "help us to add a little something in this century to the generally pleasing legacy of development bequeathed us by past generations."
The document itself is far too long for use on the website but I would be happy to forward a copy to anyone who wants to get in touch.
Scottish Power site
Re: Scottish Power site
Hi Bob,
The Scottish Power Site.
The large area of land that belongs to Scottish Power is to be vacated in the very near future - whilst Scottish Power have been good neighbours, it will be nice to live in less of an industrialized area - which we residents who live here have endured for more than twenty years, since the construction of the Harry Lauder Road which has had quite an impact on some of the area.
Although as yet it's a well kept secret of who has bought the site, or if it has been bought yet - we do not know? maybe someone out there in porty land could advise us of any rumblings.
The residents concerns of which Lawrence is very familiar with, hopefully will be taken on-board.
Unfortunately the statement of Urban design of which we have been given copies of by Lawrence do not address the fundamental serious issues of concern of the residents.
Many of us would like to see residential housing on this site, hopefully sympathetically designed. I have viewed a photograph of the new design for the building at the bottom of Bath Street, and to be fair, it is rather a nice building, it would look great in Leith or perhaps nearer to Porty Leisure Complex but it looks absolutley hellish stuck at the bottom of Bath Street its so out of character with the Victorian architecture! I can honestly sympathise with the residents who live there and understand their objections with the design - not to mention the boundary issues.
In this area there are no listed buildings, Baileyfield House (site of Laidlaws Garage) was demolished years ago!! the area is zoned 'light industrial' I shudder to imagine what some hoity toity architect will come up with for here!
Watch this space..
