I thought there might be some ineterest in the actual numbers for where Porty residents were born:-
a.) Porty 1
b.) Edinburgh 9
c.) the Lothians 1
d.) the Borders 0
e.) south of the Highland Line, north of the Border 3
f i.) north of the Highland Line 4
f ii.) in the Islands 0
g i.) south of the Border (but north of the Humber and Mersey) 3
g ii) south of the Humber and Mersey 0
The big majority is Edinburgh (apologies to Leith for counting it in with Edinburgh!), and then Highlanders/North Easterners. And one person was actually a Portyperson by birth. (Porty himself never admitted where he was born!) It's interesting (to me, anyhow!) how many in this small group are back living where they were born (or never moved away). Family history reserachers are always saying that it will be a nightmare in the future trying to trace people, because we no longer stay in the same place, but perhaps we come back ..............?

My Bad, Jay. I was born at The Western General and lived at Albert Street til I was 18 months then I moved to Porty. The Christians, Mountcastle then I got married to a porty lass. We stayed in Liberton for about a Year after we married then Milton Road East and Stanley Street, we had two houses there. Ever since I was a kid and played Tennis at Rosefield Park I wanted to live in The Brightons. I have done since 1990.
I too played tennis there many years ago, I also won the 'Glasgow fair' putting competition 2 years in a row. Had to cheat to qualify for the later rounds as the girls from Glasgow were carding level 2's in unsupervised rounds, thou when you watched them they were taking 3 or 4 to each hole. Happy Days.

Marya has assisted already. However, its worth pointing out that where we were sitting at BRABBQ last week was a putting green. The park must have been bigger in those days. Im sure they stole a bit for the bypass. From memory there were 6 courts and a pavilion and a parkys hut also. The Glass works were on the site of Baileyfield Industrial estate and where Laidlaw's is nowecm wrote:Portobello's answer to Woody and Mia! Porty, where about in the park were the tennis courts? I can't picture them at all. Can you remember roughly when they were taken away?

I just added some old pics of Rosefield Park to the Galleries section. You can just about see the tennis courts in one of them. I still have a few more photos to add. There is some talk of installing an enclosed basketball/football court in the old tennis court area. It would cost around £50000 but there are also drainage problems.
