Fords v Greggs
Fords v Greggs
What are your favourite pastries, cakes etc and from which establishment?
For me
Greggs wins on the following:
sausages rolls
fudge doughnuts
bran scones
apple slices
and I can never resist their prawn oval bites (mexican chicken runs a close second)
Fords win on
bread and rolls
cherry cake
fruit scones
faster moving queues
nice ladies

Fords for those sausage / bacon & cheese savouries
Greggs for Scotch Pies, Quiche Pies, Cornish Pasties & Apple Slices
Neither for Sausage Rolls - Kwik Snax on Brunswick Street do the best in Edinburgh. It's like your nan made them.
Storries on Leith Walk for ambience, flour-covered staff and value.
Any pharmacist for pepto-bismol, milk of magnesia, rennies, cimetidine and ranitidine.

We were very disappointed with a couple of cakes from the Sicilian Pastry place recently. A chocolate fudge cake that was in no way fudgey and a cheesecake that was quite tasteless.
There used to be a patisserie on Montrose Terrace called Barringers some years ago and I thought their cakes were great.

Barringers were indeed very good, but you have to search high and low and then pay a fortune for a decent cake in this country. I remember a few years back wandering into a back-street bakers in France and being overwhelmed by the choice and quality on offer. I chose a rum baba and watched in amazement as the assistant proceeded to pour rum over it. Can you imagine that happening in Greggs?
