Should we restrict viewing to registered members?

Post by administrator » 28 Aug 2004, 19:53

Should we restrict viewing to registered members? The decision is yours and we will go with the majority. The idea is that it might encourage lurkers to register as they wouldn't be able to read messages otherwise. Having registered they might then be more likely to become posters.

Already you have to be a registered member to post. This takes it one stage further. But is it a step in the right direction, or a step too far? You decide!

Why would people register for a site they cannot have a look at?

Strongly against this Bob... It would mean the forum couldn't be spidered by search engines. Fewer visitors from search engines means fewer visitors period.

Just my 2 cents.

John - curiosity?
Alex - I think most people discover the forum via the website, but I take your point.

What a fucking ridiculous suggestion. We do let ourselves down every now and again.

Of course, Porty's quite right - if it isn't causing any technical problems then leave it alone.
This is an open community not a gated one - people come and go. That's the way it should be. You can't force people to talk if they don't want to.

ecm and I watch another forum all the time and have hardly ever contributed to it but we wouldn't want to not be able to pop in and see how everyone is on there. It's like a little soap opera for us. Maybe THIS forum is somebody elses little soap opera!!!! 8)

Some lurkers have to lurk because they do not have regular on-line access, and can't join in, but still enjoy reading. Others like to read, but are too shy to join in, or feel they haven't anything to contribute, or live too far away to contribute to the local discussions.

Just noticed (checking up on you, BB) that you dont need to be logged on in order to view peoples profile. Most other forums (I believe) require you to be a member and to be logged in in order to view user profiles.

Eek! Mr M, is there something you're not telling us? What exactly IS your occupation? Will you be borrowing Bob's raincoat and wellies and prowling around the prom?!

Nah,

you were the only one logged on at the time.

raincoat, wellies and prom - not really a good image to conjure up no matter which way you think about it! (well not if I'm wearing them, anyway)

The poll is still open but I think the decision is now a formality. The right to lurk is obviously something that people feel very strongly about.
