Chris Hoy's Olympic Open-top Bus Ride

Post by General Tactifer » 08 Sep 2004, 00:00

If you can make it, why not pop into town tomorrow (Wednesday 8th Sept) to cheer on Chris Hoy and the other Olympic medallists who will be "honoured with an open-top procession" through the streets of Edinburgh (brave enough in itself!) from Holyrood to Bute House? The route is as follows:

"The bus will depart from the Palace of Holyroodhouse at 5:50pm and will travel up the Royal Mile, and St Giles Street, before continuing on over the Mound. The procession will then go up Hanover Street before turning left into George Street where the vehicle will continue to Charlotte Square". (Thanks to Scotsman.com for this info')

Hope you all made it along to cheer on Chris and the others! Plenty of room on the streets (Edinburgh bods are SO reticent - where's the passion!!), but there were crowds outside Bute House and a cyclists' guard of honour following the open-top bus. Those involved made a great effort to go round and thank all the people who were waiting at Charlotte Square, so I hope wee Jack's pie 'n' beans supper hadn't gone cold by the time they went inside!

Would have been a nice trip for the kids but sadly I was called away for International Duty at Hampden. I did my bit, with a full portion of chips and curry sauce, pity the boys on the park didn't quite achieve gold medal standard!

General,
Thant makes 2 of us then! (And a missed opportunity for spladooshing).

I saw them on my way home from work. I was disappointed at the turn out. I was at the bottom of the Mound with quite a few folk but there was no-one on the Mound at all.

I thought that was a shame. We all need something to be proud of and these sportsmen and women gave us that opportunity. Would it have been better if not minority sports? Or closer to the end of the Olympics? Sometimes Edinburghers need a bit of a kick up the backside.

We saw the bus leave from Holyrood and I'm so glad we went. It was a lovely evening, my 6 year old had loved every minute of the Olympics and was delighted to meet Chris Hoy last night and get his autograph, sure beats watching cartoons on T.V. :)

Ah well, you can see me on the front page of Thursday's Evening News (though you'll have to guess where!) :glasses7:

General, I saw where the photographer was and deliberately stood behind her. (I also dodged out the way when I saw the film camera on the bus too).
