Large, old floppies, shelf-liners ?

Post by Jay » 10 Sep 2004, 11:01

Can anyone tell me where I can get the information on the old-style large-size floppies - that's physical dimensions, not the amount of bytes - they were 5 something inches, as opposed to the present 3.5 ins. ones - transferred on to either CD or 3.5 ins. disk? The information is all text, in the Wordstar program (but I believe it's compatible with Word 3).

And to come down from the sublime to the ridiculous - does anyone know where I can get washable shelf and cupboard liners? The Red Giant did NOT do them!

Well I don't know about spraying drink over the keyboard, but I certainly choked on my lunch!

I'm sure IKEA have wipeable shelf liners. Bit of a trek though.

Porty undoubtedly knows this from sharing the BB flat with them

Thanks for the IKEA suggestion Mimpty. Nowhere else seems to have them.

:?:

Are they in Portobello?

(It doesn't matter if they aren't, as I don't mind going even as far as Loanhead - shelf liners are pretty easy to bring back on the bus!)

A REALLY bizarre thing has just happened ..........

I had not thought about the floppy problem (pause for all the possible comments ......... ) for some weeks, and now, having decided to ask for help from POL today, a friend I had given them to months ago, has just mailed me all the contents in a zip file, of which the text at least seems to be recoverable, although I've not looked at the databases. Now THAT is a spooky coincidence! :pale:

It's interesting that 8 or 9 old large floppies have zipped into a modern 444Kb file!

5 1/4" floppies stored about 700K, so 9 of them would be about 3-6 MB, depending on how full they were. At 92% compressioon (pretty average for office files) 450K sounds about right.

Sorry for the techie interlude.

Or you could try the website first. These may be what you are seeking:

... and I assume you've already checked out the great "Woodwares" store on the High Street - often cheaper than B&Q and more helpful too!

Many thanks to everyone for the help. :D The shelf-liners General Tactifer found are exactly what I was thinking of - even to the cushion-lining! I shall be off to Lakeland (nice idea!) as soon as I can - probably on my way home from work.

I had looked in Woodwares - the first place I usually go - (now there's a shop for Bob to do a piece on - nice staff, good selection of necessities - and they have taken over what was Porty's oldest butcher's when I first moved here - known for its Georgian interior which had not changed for 200 years or so) - and I had also looked in the Red Giant, the Edinburgh Bargain Store, Poundstetchers, the 'household' sections of all the major supermarkets etc., etc! Looks like Lakeland are the only place who do them!

Yippee! Yes - I got 'em on Saturday - and a few things I had not intended to get! Lovely shop, if a wee bit more expensive than the Red Giant!
