Did anyone go to school with Gail Porter? We want to know. What was she like? Everyone claims to have some connection to Sean Connery. I do. I'm sure everone in Porty must have some connection to Gail, however tenuous. What's yours?

Where is she anyway? We want her here on this forum and in a Portobello Online T-shirt.

I didn't go to school with her because, as you may already know, I am very slightly older than her - however, I did find a letter from her Mum in a school filing cabinet not that long ago! :D

Obviously it would be completely unprofessional and probably illegal to discuss the contents. So what did it say?

Sorry to disappoint, but according to my daughter, who was at Portobello High School with Gail, she was very popular with the boys (no surprise there then), vice-captain of the hockey team, while the daugher was captain (they still played sports after school in those days) and very, very nice! I think her Mum still lives in Joppa.

Ali Paton (of Gladiators fame) and Ewen Bremner (Trainspotting, etc) were also both there around the same time.

And if this trend continues, can I shed my Newbie tag and turn into the preferred portyreportyperson?

I read in the recent Heat Magazine (that Dadaist kindly bought for me at the airport) that Gail Hipgrave is going to be in the next I'm a Celeb Get Me Out of Here. She reportedly turned down another reality tv show (?celeb BB) to do this one in November

She was a few years ahead of me at school and the only thing I remember about her was that she played Sandy in Grease at the end of her 6th Year. I fancied one of the 6th Year boys so voluteered to sell the programmes for the show so I could get to watch it each night

Well I'm sure that if she was aware of Virtual Elder Sibling she would be in the house with us. My connection with her is that she used to go out with my son's former judo instructor.

I have an email address for her agent somewhere. Let's see if we can persuade her to join us.

Hey, my first post!

I was in the same year as Gail and Ali Paton. I didnt really know Gail at school, but I do remember her as being one of the more attractive girls in my year!

My best mates sister is still mates with Ali, I and I think she still sees her now and again.

Anyway, sorry for the lack of posts, but I do enjoy the stories and various memories from Porty folk. I was brought up in Adelphi Place and moved to Vexhim Park with my parents in the late 80s, but bought my own house on the old powerstation site 9 years ago.

Cheers

Well a year and a bit is a long time to lurk, but now that you have made your first post I hope we don't have to wait as long for your next one!

Welcome to the forum. Wish I had gone to school with Gail!

Gail was in my year at school and went out with a friend called "Pud" she was cute but what we called a Uniform ( not really a wild child ) as I remember she was a pretty ok person. Now.... Leslie Cowan and Kirsty Campbell..... there was a reason for getting up for school!!

Hang on, hang on. Ewen Bremner, aka Spud, went to PHS? The job interview on speed scene was one of the highlights of Trainspotting. So who remembers Ewen? Who is his agent and does he want a POL T-shirt?

With "Spooks" back on BBC 1 tomorrow night I wonder if Shauna MacDonald is in the new series? I used to know her and Kyrsta, her sister, when we were all at Porty.

Bob
Ewen lived in Bath Street...you might have seen his father at Portobello festivals late 80's early 90's he was Busker Willie (sad take on Boxcar Willie)
Ewen was in most of my classes, whenever he was at school, and was in the same year as Gail Porter..(34 year old...not 32 as he says he is)
I admit he has done well for himself, but he didnt make any friends at PHS with his attitude towards other people. mind you im sure he doesnt lose much sleep about it!!

Im sure Ewen was in the year above Gail (and myself) because I have just turned 33, and I'm sure Gail is 33 too.

To get back to topic for a brief moment, great picture of Gail Porter in the Portrait Gallery in the Modern Women exhibition. And a brilliant collage of the writers (Janice Galloway et al), done in the artist's (whose name has just completely escaped me) studio in Portobello... Great exhibition, well worth seeing.

Hi there, I've just joined this forum after following a link via friend reunited. What a mad bunch you all sound!

Anyway, after browsing through some of the messages, I came across this thread.

Gail is one of my oldest and dearest friends, we met when we were three when I moved next door to her and went through primary (Brunstane) school together and then Porty High. We are still friends and speak/see each other as often as we can.

Just to clarify, Gail is DEFINITELY not doing I'm a Celebrity.

Anyway, off to read some more messages and post an introduction on the relevant thread.

Look forward to chatting with you all.

The day Gail was married happened to be our wedding anniversary. I was working in Chambers Street at the time and had arranged to have the afternoon off. Froglette and I had planned to have lunch somewhere nearby. The newly married Hipgraves were just emerging from the Registrars in Victoria Street as we passed.

Our first choice restaurant was fully booked, as was our second and third. (I know, I know I shoud have booked.) It seemed that the Gail Porter entourage had booked every table within a mile radius. We ended up as I recall with a sandwich on a bench in the Grassmarket, in the rain.

Nevertheless, I'm prepared to forgive her if she a) buys a Portobello Online T-shirt and b) posts a picture of her wearing it. For £15 she will be supporting our community website, the PCATS campaign and will become even cooler than she already is.

Gail was good as Sandy in Grease in the high school play, but was made to look good by her co-star Rajan Sharma, who had bags of talent. They were superb together. Gail at school (was not into the boys as previously posted) was just a normal kid at school, I recall far more primadonna's than she could ever be. And as well as Ewen Bremner and some dobber Gladiator - do any of the ladies (or gents) remember Orlando Bloom pacing around the common rooms of Crichton or Brunstane??

Anyway the biggest living legen had to be my old schoolchum - JACKIE McNAMARA - European Finalist with Celtic 2002 - an actual star, who has actually done something that will go down in History - Hail Hail Jackie my son!!

Agree all round (apart from the football bit Davie  ) Rajan was the doggies wasn't he?

I think Orlando was only at porty for a few months whilst his parents were working here. Would have been way after my time though.

And you're right, Gail was not "into" the boys like some I could mention

Maybe not everyones cup of tea, but when a Porty punter makes the History books and is till alive - that I believe is most impressive.

So were you in her and Monsieur Sharma's year? If so you will know my sis - she might be one of the girls you may care not to mention

Yes Davie, I was in the same year as them. Who is your sister? I promise not to tell embarrassing stories if I do remember her.

Oh the memories Davie! -I remember Ronnnie Mac but had forgotten that his nickname was biggsy. And I didn't remember who Russel was until you mentioned the nose! LOL. They weren't the "real" bad boys though, just the wide boys, LOL.

Can think of several Sarah's, PM me her surname as it was then if you'd rather.
