Post by Guest » 14 Sep 2004, 18:45

A clean up of Portobello Beach has been organised for this Saturday 18 September as part of the Marine Conservation Society Beachwatch initiative, contributing to the International Coastal Cleanup taking place in more than 90 countries worldwide. Meet 10am on esplanade near Beach Bar at bottom of King's Roa.

Children under 17 must be accompanied by a reponsible adult.

Hope to see some of you there. More information here

Now this is not me trying to duck out of getting my hands dirty Bob :) but I thought the council now regularly cleaned the beach? I'm sure Hell Cat's photo showed a beautifully groomed beach the other day......

Indeed they do Marya, and a jolly good job they do of it too. I think the idea of Saturday's clean up is to monitor what type of things and in what quantity are left as litter on the beach. As well as the article I linked to in my previous post you might want to have look at this as well, which explains a bit more:

Was going to say that too - buggers (kill the filter!) often wake me up ;) They clean it about every 2nd day, although when it's stormy a lot of crap still gets washed up... Although it doesn't hang around long.

But saying that I think the part of the beach to the North/left of King's Rd might not be as clean as the rest? I seem to remember looking recently(ish) on the SEPA website and that part is not a designated swimming beach so probably not cleaned by the council?

Wot, like the stolen car that was on the beach [having been 'drowned' by the overnight high tide] at the bottom of Bellfield Street two Saturdays or so ago??!!

Not to mention various other unsavoury articles that get left on beaches either by the tide, or by humans. I'll try to be there, but I may bring my sick-bag! :pukeleft:

Pity we haven't got the t-shirts for then!

Do let me know whether we are or are not (going to get them) - or have or have not (sold enough) !

Btw, how do we get 'em from you and pay for 'em?

Serious question - do we bring our own rubber gloves and receptacles or are they provided?

Jay, I need to order 21 to get the discount price. At the moment I think we have definite orders for 15. I'm hoping to use the library as a distribution point if they are agreeable. Payment will be by cheque, made payable to Portobello Community Council. That way everyone can see where the money is going.

Equipment will be provided for the clean up, so you shouldn't need to bring anything except yourself and maybe a friend.

Is this morning only or all day? I might be around mid afternoon if you're still there.

Gedge - don't know, but my guess is that it will only take a couple of hours. Family commitments mean that I will only be able to stay for half an hour or so.

Sorry I never turned up. I had forgotten I had a "do" to go to on Friday evening. It left me with a slight "motivation" problem the next day!

I'm afraid I was another no-show - sorry! But it was the weather and my rheumatism (I am serious).

The spirit was willing etc., etc.
