The virtual polling booths are now open and the election of Portobello's first-ever Mayor has begun.
The following candidates have been considered ineligible as having no connection to Portobello, not sufficiently well-known (sorry Aunty Mary!) or because they are not in fact human.
Aunty Mary
Ronnie Corbett
Davina MacColl
a dog
Vote now. Poll closes at 9pm Friday.

Javid Konscious is definitely the prime candidate - he knows most things about the people of Porty who frequent his shop!

I just voted for Javid. He's like your dad, uncle and favourite teacher all rolled into one.
I joked with him that if they opened a Semi-Chem next door they could merge and be called Semi Konscious.

As returning officer, I hereby declare the inaugural Mayor of Portobello to be Javid Konscious, a clear winner with 42% of the vote.
Congratulations to Javid. Perhaps his agent might like to make a short speech?
Commiserations to the other candidates. (I find it very difficult to believe that Gail Porter didn't get a single vote. I was certainly tempted to give her one myself.)

Boom boom. I'm not sure if I am Javid's agent, but as it was I who put his name forward, and in his absence, I have prepared a few words.
Ahem.
Thanks.

I spoke to Javid the other day and congratulated him on his success. He didn't have a clue what I was talking about.

Just goes to show; Javid may be the Mayor of Portobello but he is no different from the rest of us.

Congratulated our new mayor last night while buying a pint of milk just before he closed. He looked kind of bashfully pleased but still a little bemused and baffled.

She could be Lady Mayoress (if she's not too busy Sunshine Clubbing it!

)
I spoke to our newly appointed Mayor today and he's assured me that he will make an acceptance speech - just as soon as he can find the website!

I think Mr Javid was secretly pleased to be named Mayor. He also knew about "Semi-Koncious".... does anyone know his first name BTW?

Javid is his "first" name. As a muslim, his first name is Mohammed so Jav is like a middle name, I think.
It's his last name I don't know.

I work beside his daughter and her surname is 'Javid' so how does that work? Does she take his first name as her surname?

No, it's more likely that I'm wrong.
I guess then his name is Mohammed Javid.
The only reason I thought it was that was because my mate at uni was Mohammed Assad Afzal and we all called him Assad.
My mistake.

Well its been a great year and I must be the first to congratulate Javid Konscious on doing an outstanding job. In a year where we saw the defeat of the Superstore campaign and the resurrection of the Traders association among many other good things, Javid has been a rock. And although he has kept a low profile throughout his year in office I feel a sense of his guiding hand always being there. It is no exagggeration to say that he has fulfiled every request made to him by the community he serves.
Javid, enjoy your last month in office, it has been a pleasure for all of us and you shall be long remembered as the first of the new generation of Portobello Mayor's.
Nominations for next year's Major ought to be submitted by September 25th and hustings will take place thereafter. The target is to appoint the new Major on October 1st.

Is that the first nomination? I worry about her. I still see her now and again, clipboard in hand, counting traffic. I wonder if the lassie is right in the heid.

I would like to nominate dc. I'm not her agent though - I want to be her Ambience Co-ordinator. Pink Floyd have one.

I'm extremely flattered to be nominated for a second year running. Dadaist you can be my Ambience Co-ordinator any time. What does it entail? Do you have to come round and select what fragrance candles I'll be burning of an evening? Maybe choose the music and arrange the cushions?
PS I like my campaign logo.

It's a complete package. By the time the campaign ends we will have approached Martha Stewart levels of crass marketing. We may be New Age but behind the Feng Shui lies an efficient bureaucratic machine. We did it for John Travolta. We did it for Gwyneth. Now we have come for you.
(terms and conditions apply, this contract is on a strictly "no-win, no fee" basis - should Ms Cairns be duly elected, our bill we be forthcoming. this message is included in the overall cost.)

Well, after such a successful first year in office, I nominate Javid Konscious for a second term-in-office to continue his excellent behind-the-scenes work and representation of the Portobello Community.

Javid can make a comeback next year.

Should we not be electing a Provost rather than a Mayor?

This business of Provost came up last time and Porty's defence was
Mayor has more of what Dada calls the X factor. Plus it makes it distinct from the officiial title of Provost. IMHO.
What a great community this is. We can't even decide the titlle of the Leader we haven't got.
