Offensive or not?

Post by Porty » 25 Sep 2004, 10:11

As avid readers of www.porty.org.uk will know. We are building an extension to our house. It has been a Year and as you may imagine there have been highs but mostly lows. The lowest point was reached 2 and 1/2 weeks ago, when, for a 3 day period we had no water at all, none. I will digress.

There is always a funny side and the plumber was not looking forward to telling me, as he assumed I would blame him     . He telephoned me from the basement of the house, I was directly above him and he 'comforted' me with the knowledge that the fact we had no water was 'doing his head in too'. What a relief!!!!!

Anyway,, I came home during the day on day 2, I was in the house for about 5 minutes and Flearoy said to me 'Dad, I think you have stood in dog s hit.' I had. It was all over the hall, stairs, bathroom and dining room. I started to clean it up using a dry newspaper, eventually I got dog s hit on my right hand. There was no water to remove it.

Now I may be lingually or articulately stunted? I'm sure I am. However, if I was Joseph Heller I would struggle to come up with a more appropriate or definitive word to describe what was on my shoe and all over the house? It was S hit and that is how I will refer to it as I bore people with the story in Years to come. S hit summed up the mood of the occassion and descrptively is unassailable. IMHO

If you have taken the time to read this? Then please do me a favour and vote. If you vote Yes then I would appreciate if you could provide a better word to describe the S hit. When I say better, I mean a word that is better descriptively and also acceptable to the listener, a word that doesn't make you sound like a pompous pedant. Be honest.

Did you read the bit about pompous pedant?

It won't doo I' afraid. Think about the moment where although I knew it was dog s hit and I knew it was on my hand. i still had to have a sniff to make sure. doggy doo doesn't cut it . in fact up until that point Crap may have been a poor substitute but like I say S hit is unassailable. (sp)

Porty

Earlier, I was wondering why there was so much laughter coming from the room where Dada's computer is - I have to tell you that he was almost wetting himself laughing at your story

somehow I don't think that will make you feel better

Thoughtful of you to plug our new domain name Porty, but in fact it's www.porty.org.uk as your new T-shirt will soon testify.

canine faeces?
canine excreta?
dog mess?
dog dirt?

From City of Ed recently:
It is estimated that a dog will produce half a tonne of foulings in ten years.
It's a wonder we are not knee-deep in the stuff!

Just doesn't have the right ring to it though, does it Bob? Sorry, but in the example Porty spelt out there's only one perfect word that really fits and I'm pretty sure it's what 99.9% of us would use too.....unfortunately the profanity filter won't allow us.

Now that is a contender, not sure if its the correct spelling either? Plus, is it a different word or a derivation? I'm not sure it has the same rhythm and hopefullly I will never get another chance to find out.

Bearcub, I think its 100% .

Bob, do you imagine it would go something like this?

"Dad, I think you have stood in dog faeces"

"My, my flearoy you are correct, is that dog mess over there on the carpet that chemdry cleaned only the day before yesterday?. Yes, yes I do believe it is.

"Flearoy, I simply cannot wait to go on POL and tell all our porty comrades that we have marmalade all over the house , oh and now i have canine excretia on my fingers and we have no water, oh fiddles ticks"

Anywy Bob and the other Mods Ive made my point now. Its often not the word that's profane it is the way its used. (there are obvious exceptions) For the record I want to document what a great job you do and have done. Im sorry about getting the web address wrong I will go and edit it right after this.

I have not looked at the poll results as yet. I have not voted. I would like to confirm that the above story is 100% true.

Have I shot myself in the foot? Dog marmalade has a resonance. If we must have a filter and if it continues to be words then I hereby nominate marmalade as the PPF substitute for S hit.

Although, I really would like to see a trial without PPF see if we can all behave responsibly. It just takes a little faith.

I believe the correct spelling is ess aych aye tee ee.

It seems to be the Scots and Northern English version of ess aych aye tee, but in my opinion, resonates (as they say nowadays) far more strongly than its Southern cousin.

I am most definitely not offended by your use of the word but am appalled that you don't take your shoes/boots off at the front door.

You're a disgrace, man!

Plumber update:

So he appears this morning, I hear him before I see him, has been AWOL for 3 days. I make my way down to challenge him . He has obviously been on a Plumbers Customer Care course and decides to tackle me head on. "Good moring and what can I do for you today?" .... i kid you not.

I am not in the least bit fazed, I squint, Clint Eastwood style, looking him straight in the eye, I say one word: 'Plumbing'.

He goes bright red and blurts out "Is that all?" I feign incredulity and retort "That's always been all".

Customer couldn't care course would be more appropriate.

Mods wait!!!! I am not resurrecting this thread to start a profanity debate. It is in fact a celebration.

Today, 13 days short of 2 years, I finally have no building materials, skip, rubble or anything on the street outside my house. Marya and dc can testify. Its gone and will not be back.
:D :D
Building control today approved the work of the ****** plumber who was responsible for this thread and now we are almost home and dry. Hallelujah!!! :D :D :D

Only yesterday another neighbour was commenting on the long-standing, semi-permanent nature of Porty's bags of sand, when hey presto, today I saw a young man who looked as thought he might be on community service shovelling aforesaid sand into a wheel barrow. It has indeed gone and the road in front of P's house looks quite bare without it.

It is estimated that a dog will produce half a tonne of foulings in ten years.
Then your average human must produce about 4 tonnes of s hit in a life time!

I'm usually an even tempered person so there was never much danger of any violence. Although I have lost many, many hours sleep.

This thread is nearly a year old and I thought at that time we would be done by xmas 2004

Poppy when I said the young man looked as though he might be on community service, I meant that he looked too young to be in employment. Anyway, he was doing community service, clearing up Porty's array of sandbags.
