Fireworks

As the fireworks season (from around now until after New Year) is almost upon us, and there has already been some discussion on this topic, I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread on the subject.

I feel strongly that the sale of all fireworks should be restricted to licenced organisations and that they should be available solely for the purpose of public displays. Even in the hands of pyro-technic experts, things can go wrong. There have been too many tragedies and it has become a real anti-social issue in recent years.

So which local shops are selling fireworks to children and how do we stop them? Simple. Just send your obviously under-age kid in to buy some and if he/she is served then report the shopkeeper to the police. Just remember to have someone else there to corroborate your story. Entrapment? Perhaps, but justified as far as I'm concerned. I feel the same way about cigarettes and alcohol, but that's another topic.

New legislation has been introduced this year. It is an offence to possess fireworks in a public place by anyone under the age of 18. It is also an offence for anyone to use fireworks after 11pm, except for 5 November (midnight) and New Year, Diwali and Chinese New Year (1am).

so your trying to say that underage drunk kids that smoke should NOT play with fireworks at 2.30am???, darn, that was half the fun!!!

we dont get Nov 5th here

which kind of sucks!!

anyway have fun when it does come, and throw a Scotmid pallet on the bonfire for me!!

Even in the hands of motoring experts, things can go wrong. There have been too many tragedies and it has become a real anti-social issue in recent years.

Quite a lot more anti-social and dangerous than, say, fireworks for example.

Tell me about it GT... I bought my first car from one of the places in Bath Street lane at the top of Bath street, next to Towerbank annex. the steering gave out on a bend near Heriot Watt 4 months later, luckely no-one, including myself were hurt. I only buy from decent dealerships now (trust me.... many dealershps are far from decent)

Wangi, I believe there's to be a display at Goose Green along in Musselburgh you might get a good view of that from home even.

We don't go to any displays because we feel you see far more fireworks just going for a stroll along the prom. So much so that friends have asked if they can jouin us as they also think it's the best view!
Mind you, don't know if this is any POL member, but the house on the prom with the high wall had their bonfire too close to the prom wall last year - it was not so much fun to have to take a screaming child (youngest not keen on fireworks) through a cloud of sparks and smoke from their fire...
It's also my niece's 18th birthday today...and she absolutely hates fireworks and always has. She hates going out on her birthday - how rubbish is that?!

Sandra, we're heading down to the beach tonight with the most expensive box of fireworks I can find. Hopefully we'll get a bonfire going too, otherwise we'll just gatecrash someone else's.
On previous occasions we've gone out to the display at Mussellburgh just behind the race course. They have a huge bonfire with a firework display....which can be seen from Porty beach too!

This is doing my nut in! We've had 5 hours of war zone like conditions, a rocket has just missed my back velux window and the decibels seem to be rising by the minute. I don't remember it being this bad last year. People obviously have a lot of money to burn

It was pretty wild at times. Still, it's getting much quieter now, Epykat.
And you can blame marya and family for one of the loudest, longest ones

.
We had a good time in spite of youngest offspring hating every second of it and other half having to cart him off home. And on our way home, eldest and I saw a firework actually skim the water, bouncing up off the sea like a stone before exploding spectacularly, reflected in the water...
But no consolation to you as they skim your windows, I guess!
