Deputy Mayor of Portobello Poll

Post by Jamesie » 03 Oct 2004, 20:44

I've been informed that the standing orders of the Portobello Town Council prohibit a candidate from standing in both Mayoral and Deputy Mayoral elections, hence the removal of Paul from Buddy's from the nominations.

Polls close 10pm Monday.

What happened to none of the above? Is he dis-qualified for already appearing in the Mayor Poll?

Oooh! A tie-break situation. How exciting.

:D

What do the rules say about that then Jamesie?

These rules date back to the early 1890's and some of them are actually on parchment - I'm told it'll take 24 hours to get them out of the archives/until I make up my mind

Nice to see a healthy 4% turnout of the Porty Online electorate

Don't the rules require such a situation to be decided by a duel on the beach or something along those lines?

That would be fun!

Good idea, ecm!

what about a full Porty triathlon?

(Slow) cycling on the prom
Swim to Berwick Law
quick run up to the top - they'd have a whale of a time.

Home in an ambulance for the ceremony

We'd get a quicker result from that rather than Mr. M's triathlon suggestion though.

Bernadette is just an all round fantastic lady! She must be in her 80s now but she still runs the Sunshine Club for local pensioners and I'm pretty sure she does the lunch club at the Church too. She organises tea dances and trips for all the 'old folk' (her words!). She's just a lovely, lovely person.

Bernadette Heron

Post by CatzVP » 18 Oct 2004, 07:23

Bernadette and her husband John were neighbours of mine for 25 years, and the one thing I can say about her is she pulled Portobello together with her events. (she did hang a lot of towels out in the back garden though because of the hairdressing business ) lol.. Porty needs more people like Bernadette

Which means you must have lived in Bath Street? Which means, we lived at number 36, which means we must have been neighbours too at some point?

And me too! I lived at 52 for about 5 or 6 years.

I lived at No. 60 from June 1995 until this August - I know Bernadette, but I never knew her surname! If I'd known she was Bernadette Heron, I'd have voted for her!

What does all that mean?
We lived in the middle top at 36 from 1984-88. Our stair all seemed to be related! Some were McEwans and some were MacPhersons but I think they were all sort of connected and were also related to somebody in No30 and over the road at 41 (are you related to any of them?). My Nana lived at 43 for years but she was gone by the time you got over there! Mrs Webber (the ice cream van lady) lived on the bottom main door one for years and Bernadette and John lived in the other main door one. We were brought up at No.12 and our aunty and uncle lived in the one two down from the Salvation Army (now has a pond (?) in the front garden). I could go on and on about the people who lived/worked in Bath Street but I don't want to put you all to sleep!
