I notice that Alex's name has disappeared from the list of moderators. He hasn't posted since he went on holiday during the VES thread (which I also notice seems to have disappeared - Bob, I thought VES was to be kept locked on a "classic threads forum? ).
I know he's back in town cos I saw him in Windsor Place the other day. What's happened?
Was it something somebody said??

Alex has decided to take a break from the forum and asked to be de-registered though he intends to "lurk" for a bit. There was no dramatic falling out or anything (sorry to disappoint all you soap fans!) just that he has a lot of other demands on his time right now and felt being a moderator was becoming a burden rather than a fun activity. He'll still be with us in spirit! Don't worry we haven't "banned" him

VES threads "archived", does this really mean "deleted"???. Are there plans to rehouse them elsewhere? I thought most people agreed the whole thing had been a good laugh overall. Did someone take offence and ask for them to be removed?
And now Alex "disappears"! How odd.
I hope Alex will be back again at some point in time but de-registering seems quite a final act.
And he didn't even say goodbye.
Ta, ta Alex, take care.

Alex asked to be de-registered and my understanding is that his privacy is important to him and that he would prefer a more anonymous online relationship. I expect he may well re-register under a different name at some point. Or maybe he just likes to be mysterious?
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Alex for his huge contribution to the success of the forum. Consistently one of the top posters, he was a natural choice as moderator for his even-handed, thoughtful approach. Oh dear, this is starting to sound like an obituary!
Anyway, I'm pretty sure he'll be back sooner or later. I think we all miss him.
I'm afraid the truth is that the VES threads were deleted, though they live on in legend. In a couple of years' time no-one will know what we are talking about when we refer to them. It'll be our little secret!

Yes do miss him and its a shame he didn't say goodbye.
I think the forum is great though I can see why people like to remain anonymous online.

Why were the VES threads deleted?
I don't think this is funny Bob.
What were the reasons for the deletion of what was by all accounts one of the most popular and fun threads?
Who decided they had to go?

This was a decision taken by the moderators, after much deliberation, following a complaint. I had hoped to archive the thread, or make some edits, but the decision taken was to delete all VES topics and I respect that decision.

May I ask the basis of the complaint?
Why should all the threads have to be deleted, why not just delete any specific post that resulted in the complaint?
Why weren't we informed that this was the reason behind the deletion at the time the deletion was made?
You will undoubtedly inform me that it's none of my business but I'd like to think that those of us who participated in the threads knew where and when we overstepped the mark in the opinion of the complainant and the moderators.

Sorry ecm, we took a decision that we felt at the time was the in the best interests of everyone concerned. I can't really expand on that any further but I hope that you will trust the moderators to a sufficient degree and accept that we took the best course of action under the circumstances.
For the record, nothing you wrote was offensive in any way and the thread was indeed the most popular in the history of the forum.

........an eerie silence descends over the Portobello On Line Community. Tumbleweed blows across monitors from Wakefield to Eastfield, The Prom to Gilberstoun and places much further afield. Lurkers stand silently their mouths hang open , breaths are bated .............
