News from the Community Council

As the board seems to have gone to sleep a bit of late (are you all on holiday? Am I talking to myself here?) I thought you might like a few snippets of news from the Community Council meeting this evening, in the hope that it inspires some discussion!

A large part of the meeting was taken up with a discussion concerning Vodaphone's proposals to erect a 3G mast within the bell tower of Bellfield Church, to the dismay of many local residents. If you feel strongly about this you may wish to know that there is a public meeting at the church at 7:30pm on 10 July. It was agreed (after much debate) that the secretary should write on behalf of the CC, expressing concern at the siting of such masts in residential areas, on grounds of health and safety.

Lawrence Marshall reminded members that the Crossrail service will be extended as far as Edinburgh Park in October, with a journey time of around 25 minutes.

Both the History Society and PAS have pledged funds toward the purchase of the Provost Brand portrait.

PAS seeks volunteers to help out with watering the hanging baskets on the High Street.

Inspector Wardrop is keen to promote leisure facilities for youths on the basis that he would rather have young people entertained than policed. He also seeks support from the community for a bid for CCTV coverage. You may wish to demonstrate your support by writing to your local councillor and/or MP. The CC agreed a £150 contribution toward a 'lost children' initiative, named Promseal that will run over the next month.

Oh, and the small matter of Grannie's Attic. Work is scheduled to re-commence in August and I hope I'm not misquoting Lawrence in saying that he now appears satisfied that the line of the new building is not any further forward than the original.

Must be something in there to tickle your fancy?

Re the 3G mast at Bellfield Church, pity we did not know about the one that was errected overnight (it seemed) at Telferton. I agree that they are an eyesore and a health hazard and the bellfield Residents are right to complain, but this begs the question again, where where the Community Council / PAS/conservationists etc. when the development of such an out of place designed building was giving the go ahead at Bath Street.
And.. where were the bodies of Local Representation when the Residents of Baileyfield Road needed them?

Another question, why could Cllr. Marshall not post the details of the go ahead for the Bath Street Build on this site himself!! Cllr Marshall obviously is a busy man what with his career commitments and Cllr. duties, readers of this forum know the anguish of the residents of Bath Street, it is a very emotive subject therefore in my unqualified opinion, I feel that the residents should have been appraoched by Cllr. Marshall directly, although on the other side of the coin perhaps Cllr Marshall did not have the time to impart this information to them himself.

One Final point, isn't there a portrait of William Bailey (First Provost of Portobello) surely he would have been a more appropriate candidate for the Position
