The Porty must-have Xmas presents just keep on coming. Portobello History Society was successful in a grant application to make a film entitled 'It always seemed to be sunny', Memories of Portobello. Available on video from local shops from 22 November the film, introduced by Paul Young, is a mix of old and new stills and film footage along with reminiscences from local residents.
Only 200 of these videos have been produced so make sure you get one. The History Society hopes that if it proves to be successful they will be able to release a DVD version at some point in the future.
The video, with accompanying booklet, will retail at £12:99.
Dear Santa
I have been very good this year. Please could I have the following:
Portobello Online T-shirt - £15:00
Portobello Traders Calendar - £5:00
'It always seemed to be sunny' - £12:99
oh, and dinner at the Dalriada with Gail Porter?

Just back from the official launch of this film at the Town Hall, the world premiere in fact! I was very impressed both by the content and the very professional way it has been produced.
I can't recommend this film too highly - a fascinating glimpse into Portobello's past. I'm sure it will bring back great memories for people who remember the outdoor pool, the potteries, the gala days etc. It's just as interesting too for younger people and for incomers like myself to see Porty as it used to be.
Lots of old photographs and film footage you will never have seen before, along with the living memories of people who were there. Brilliant stuff and many congratulations to everyone involved in the making of this film.
Rush out and buy it. Look forward to hearing your reviews.

I've just sat and watched it with my mother in law who was at the premier - (my father in law is the geezer with the bottles!). I can also lay claim to two Aunties, a cousin and a cousin in law all being on film

I thoroughly enjoyed it but I have to say it only rubs in what we've actually lost in Portobello over the years. No wonder the kids just hang about. We had loads to do......but I'll stop there before I start another anti flats rant!!
Enough of your nonsense - get back to the Play Pen!

Sounds brilliant,

where can I get one

I spent most of my childhood in Portobello, even though I didn't actually live here until I was old enough to leave home. Most of my time was spent in the Open Air Pool during the summer (which is where I met my other half) and the baths during the winter months. Then we used to hang out in the cafe on the High Street, can't remember what it was called, it was run by two brothers - Italian I think - Gino and ?????? . Can anyone out there remind me about that - anyway great place for a coffee, spent many happy hours there!
My other half was Porty born and bred and one of his claim to fames is that his Dad taught Paul Young to fish - many, many, many years ago, when he was just a boy and before he became famous! (Paul Young that is

) and got his own fishing programme on the TV. - honest its true

It should be on sale from local shops from Monday. Was the cafe the one that used to be where R S McColls is now?

Thanks Bob, I'll be sure to get a copy

for a trip down memory lane.
No the cafe was along the other end of the High Street next to the Figgate Whins, I think its the hairdressers now isn't it

My memory is not good

By coincidence I was talking to Paul from Buddy's just the other day for a new article I'm planning for Planet Porty. The shop used to be owned by the Nicora family. It was a jewellers but I think it was run as a cafe prior to this. Paul told me that his mum used to work in there as a young girl.
Anyone else remember this?

Yes, I remember Nicoras but only when it was a jewellers, not when it was a cafe too. Too posh for us anyway. We frequented Jack's Locker in Bath Street (where my mother and father in law conducted their courtship apparently!)

Ah yes cafe was called Nicoras now I remember,

(thanks Epykat) and when it was turned into a Jewellers we were all very upset.

I' not sure what year that was. Anyone out there know
A big thanks to Epykat for popping along today to give me an Avator lesson - easy when you know how, isn't it

(':thumbleft:')
We decided we would be among the first to have a Christmas Avator ('

Haven't quite got the hang of the emoticons yet though

Love the avatar Lizzie, but it is a little too big. The rule is that avatars should be no wider than 125 pixels. You can check the size of any image by right-clicking and selecting 'Properties'.
Think I'll have to have a look myself. I'm getting bored already with mine.
So how about sharing your memories of Nicora's with us?

Well, yes I'm afraid so. But that shouldn't be a problem now that you know how to do it.

Hang on to in the meantime until you find another though.

How can I say no? (without appearing heartless, Scrooge-like, officious etc)
OK, completely unfair use of emotional blackmail, but you win.
Ahem, avatars should be no wider than 150 pixels (or until someone else finds one that's slightly wider and then begs me to keep it).
Marya, Bellybabe - help me out here! I can't cope with these women.

Well done Lizzie! Bob, does this mean we can start putting our Christmas avatars up and ignore the 1st December rule? I don't mind - I'm already getting into the Christmas mood

Congratulations, Lizzie!

Glad to hear all went well. Jack is such a lovely name. It's all very exciting. It would be great to see photos.
Your Christmas avatar looks very like Isla (without the wings!). She is just learning to say some words and can vaguely say granny and grandad.
Enjoy (as I'm sure you will!).
