Good websites for kids

Post by bellybabe » 05 Dec 2004, 23:44

Can anyone recommend any? Our three year old is happy now they've updated the Thomas the Tank Engine site, and CBeebies has loads of stuff for preschoolers, but we were horrified to discover that our seven year old is getting no ICT at all at school. We decided to remedy this as soon as possible, and so are looking for good sites with interesting and educational games and stuff. He's quite geeky  so science, ancient greece/rome/egypt, space, engineering, etc would all be great. Oh, and he loves art. Hates music :( . Can anyone help?

Here are a few to start with:

Grid Club - games and activities for 7-11 year olds: http://www.gridclub.com/

Parents Online - government-sponsored site for parents and children 0-16+. Loads of great links to other sites here: http://www.parentsonline.gov.uk/

Edinburgh Libraries - a collection of useful links to sites that might be of interest to kids and their parents: http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/wizard_websites/wizard.html

Woodlands School, Kent - good school-produced site with educational content and games too: http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk ... Index.html

Others include (and there are a lot!):
Schoolzone - http://www.schoolzone.co.uk/
Brainpop - http://www.brainpop.com/

or why not get them to design their OWN website? http://webmonkey.wired.com/webmonkey/kids/

Bellybabe, my kids have a really useful book called "500 of the Coolest Sites for Cyberkids" by Lagoon Books ISBN 11902813-27-8

Great stocking filler

And very useful for getting help with homework

Aaah, foxy, that sunds familiar - I think we used to have that but I don't know what happened to it :? . And the otehr one we had was an old copy of the Rough Guide to the Internet that came free with a bank account or something but other half threw it away a few weeks ago - just before I asked for it so i could look at its useful kids' links section!

I'll search the study for it once again now you've reminded me it exists!

And GT, thanks for the suggestions - I'll have a look through.

It's like the tardis.

No, we just force the children to share so we can use the teeny tiny box room as a grandly named "study".

Back on topic, other half has just told me about this one too - www.funbrain.com, I think it was.
