A sense of the High Street!! What gives?

At last nights PCATS meeting on the marketing of the Powerleague site I learned of a new concept or at least new to me. A SENSE OF THE HIGH STREET

Apparently we in Portobello do not have a real sense of the High Street, for a long enough distance and its a real problem. In particular for those people who either live in the West or approach the High Street from the West. As far as I can ascertain people from the West do not acquire a SOTHS untill approximately the Laundrette whereas those from the East start getting a SOTHS at Kidds the chemist. There is a signifigant imbalance.

Have many of you been aware of this phenomenom?

To be honest it sounds like utter tosh. People do not want to live on a High Street either - they want to live on quiet side streets without 24/7 traffic.

And if there was/is a great demand for High St style shops then why are many sitting empty?

High St shmiii street - what the council need to be thinking about is a joint up plan between the development of Leith Docks and what happens at Seafield and Portobello. A pedestrian/cycle promenade from the dock entrance to Portobello. Proper Integration of the planned Leith "bypass" with the Harry Lauder Road and the Seafield roundabout (i.e. traffic lights aren't long term) and the A720. Future use alongside Seafield Rd - continuing commercial/industrial or?

Could not agree more Wangi - I get really frustrated when the solutions are simple but get overlooked in the wider scheme of self interested governing bodies.

It sounds to me like they would be far better off concentrating on A SENSE OF REALITY

as a well known local business man I would have expected you to have a finely tuned SOTHS - in fact I believe you have demonstrated it in your choice of location for your business!

Don't go rocking the boat by dismissing 'sense of place' as a concept - our masters are busy spending millions in Edinburgh, with a good chunk of it specifically targetted at this concept.

And if, as has been suggested elsewhere, Porty Town gets a City Centre Manager, you'd better get used to it! (Along with footfall ratios and access profiles and sustainabilty issues and stuff and stuff and stuff)
