12 – 15 years old? Want to race?

We are currently recruiting young sailors 12-15 to race our club Fevas on the Scottish circuit, April to September this year. It involves five events around Scotland. Let us know if any young people you know are interested. We are looking for people with some sailing experience – but not loads as coaching will be built into some of the sessions.

Wednesday evening sessions for children and young people

Every Wednesday Evening from April 25th until October 10th 2012 we will be running sailing and kayaking sessions for children and young people at the club. The sessions will be open to all levels of experience for those aged 8 – 18.

We are initially offering these sessions to all club members, their families and friends to gauge numbers – before promoting it more widely. So if your children or grandchildren are interested let us know as soon as you can.

The sessions are for everyone from beginners who just want to have a go on the water through to serious competitors who want to refine their racing technique. The aim is to encourage kids to come regularly to create a strong club atmosphere.

We hope to set up a number of groups: Under 12s practicing mainly in Toppers and Optimists, a 12-15 group using two handed RS Fevas – and an older group ready to try more challenging boats. We also hope to have a small kayaking group and have discussed developing a group of young rowers.

We will have a number of club volunteers working with the groups and providing rescue cover. More volunteers (including parents of children taking part) would be welcome – especially with kayaking experience – so please get in touch if you can help!

People should arrive by 6.15 for a 6.30 start on the water. The sessions will run to about 8 or 8.15 depending on the time of year. Parents of under 16s should accompany children for the first session to sign them in but are not required to stay. However, parents of under 12s are asked to remain close by until the warmer weather, in case children need to return to shore.

We would like regular participants to provide their own wetsuit although any old wetsuits or other kit that children have grown out of would be gratefully received. We can provide buoyancy aids for those that need them. A change of clothes would also be required.

The cost is free to members (junior membership is £20). Children who want to have a go can pay £5 on the night for a one month’s trial membership.

If you are interested, please email me with the name of the child, their age, their experience / qualifications (if any) and what they are interesting in doing. We will send you a form to complete nearer the time. If you have any questions please let me know.
