Portobello Market
I would love to be able to say that the market is going from strength to strength, but I just can't. I want to be a loyal user of what is a wonderful idea, but I'm afraid it's just not happening for me.
I've tried to go to every one and on each visit I have been delighted to find some new trader with fantastic products. But for every new trader there is someone who has dropped out. The market isn't getting any bigger. There is simply not enough there to make it worth going to. This week for instance there was only one meat vendor and for some time there has only been one veg stall. Neither had what could be described as a wide variety of products available; I know we are trying to support seasonal produce here, but there is more in season than was on offer. Moreover, for what I think ought to be predominantly a produce market, there were more non-food stalls to choose from.
I can't help feeling that the problem is there are too many markets and too few suppliers; there are bigger markets for them than Portobello (a vicious circle really). Plus there is the increasing number of permanent shops offering a similar range of products. Has this project run it's course? I hope not but I'm not holding my breath...
