Funpark - Licensed Snooker Club
"Turn first floor of the building into a private licensed snooker club and the demolition of a portion of the building"
Got the notification through the post today - i'll be gutted if this goes ahead - we live right across from the Funpark. Its bad enough just now with the engine revving / car stereos & people noise just now.... add booze into the mix and i fear the worst.....

I too live very close to the FunPark but we never received any notification - so this is news to us - as you say the noise is bad enough already.
I do remember the FunPark applied for a licence a few years ago but it was refused - thank goodness! - can you give us any further details on this proposed licensed snooker club?
How old would you be, if you didn't know how old you are?
The application (06/00895/FUL) has a status of "Application Invalid On Receipt", so it looks like someone didn't dot their i's...

Lizzie - i'm no good at reading the plans and can't really see how this benefits people in the area - maybe you could enlighten me?Lizzie wrote:Thank you for your help Wangi - you were certainly quick of the mark
It sounds like reasonably good news, for the moment, to all of us who live along here beside the Funpark
- will check it out
From what i can tell - there will be a large pool & bar area upstairs.... and a balcony for people to sit out and drink / smoke.
Again - i'm not too sure about the plans, but my interpretation is that they will be shortening the building at the East side (where some cars park just now, no doubt to sell the land for development in the future) - this will mean cars all parking along Bridge Street, and no doubt imposing more on private parking.
The balcony combined with booze & the soon to be implemented smoking rules will no doubt be extremely loud - and will this mean an extension to their 11pm (ish) closing time...
Anyway - don't want to seem all doom & gloom, hopefully i'm missing something on the plans - but i can't help but be very worried about the area around me. I can't think of any time where introducing a booze license into an area has helped the residents around....
PC asked
PC, I'm taking it upon myself to answer for Lizzie [I know her well!]. What the good news was was that the application had been rejectedon a technicality [although they can easily resubmit]. Lizzie definitely would not be happy about what's proposed!Lizzie - i'm no good at reading the plans and can't really see how this benefits people in the area - maybe you could enlighten me?

Saw that. Snooker Hall, what about a nice cafe/restaurant/bar? With views out to the beach/sea - would go down a storm I would think. The bottom bit at the new flats at bath street - obviously the developers/owners think differently, but that would be a total huge seller having a really nice coffee/lunch stop with a bit for dog walkers to have their coffee and their pooches to have some water. A definite hit I reckon.
(just being a regular walker/dog walker in that area - a definite money maker) for some entrepreneur who comes along.
Think the Prom could do with a lot more TLC... the Indoor Bowling centre already has a great balcony that could be used as a cafe/ bar terrace, but I've never seen it used as such . The Funpark could stay as it is with, again, the addition of a cafe/ bar, without the snooker hall. The wee comment about ' drinking Pimms' was maybe a bit off the mark !!
Generally, things could do with sprucing up and, as one person said, the re- introduction of ice cream parlours etc would make everything a bit more family orientated.
Although probably not officially the entertainment end of the Prom, the 'Cooncil 'could do with having a look at the fencing at the Dog and Cat Home end of Seafield Road - there are gaps and some woefully inadequate strands of wire supposedly stopping folks from falling to their doom on the chunky rocks and slabs below. Further along, nearer Bath St., there are gaps in the old iron railings.
Porty could and should be lovely - Rothesay is of a similiar vintage, and maintains a quaint sense of faded grandeur. I think a lot more could be made of our Victorian Heritage and popularity. On that note ....
Anyone heard any more about the proposed pier ?

I've been in a few snooker clubs in my time and have never seen anyone drinking Pims.Architect for the site, George Morrison, said he believed the club would be an asset to the area.
He said: "The balcony will be a nice area, where people can sit and drink their Pims or whatever and enjoy the view of the estuary. There just isn't the need any more for such a big amusement arcade building."

Couldn't believe it when i read that!!Epykat wrote:I thought the Pimms quote was funny too. Maybe it was a typo and they meant to put PiNTs?
I got a PM on friday from J.B. asking me for comment - but i didn't check my messages until yesterday so couldn't add my comments
Rather than "enjoying Pimms" i find it more likely that the balcony will provide an outlet for the clientelle to chuck their fag butts and on some occassions their drinks onto the promenade...
I don't expect for one minute that this venue would be frequented by people wearing bow ties and waistcoats.....

Fantastic news that their is to be a bar and snooker club. About time the prom completrly rejuvenated itself!! And at last a place for the youths to hang out. i am fed up listening to people going on about kids hanging about, playing music etc... What else are they supposed to do? i was a kid once, as no doubt most of you were too - please get over yourselves and let Porty be cool once more...

Last night's meeting of the Community Council opened with an interesting presentation by The Morrison Partnership, the architects responsible for drawing up an outline proposal for development of the current Amusements Arcade and the old Ghost Train site.
The owner of the site has agreed to a council request to give up a 2 metre wide strip along the entire frontage of the site, in order that the Prom be widened at this point.
The proposal is for a tall (5 storey) building directly on the Prom. The building is stepped down at the sides, (which would curve round away from the Prom), to a two storey one.
There would be underground parking for residents, which would have the added advantage of raising the level of the first floor flats to offer some privacy for residents.
The building would have roof gardens, with further landscaping on the south side (the side looking towards the High Street). The developers suggest creating a 'piazza' like area around the kilns, which would be hard landscaped and contain a curved seating area where the third kiln used to be.
The response to the proposal was generally favourable though there were concerns voiced that the building would be another 'Miami style' new build.

Fun Park Site Plans
Hi
This is my first blog from a fairly new Porty resident. Just got some info from The Kilns Neighbourhood watch group yesterday. Apparently there is a six storey block of flats proposed for the Fun Park Site at the bottom of Bridge Street/Pipe Street. The plans look hideous-like a multi storey car park. The implications are massive-looks like they will have to build a boardwalk as it takes up some of the prom, will block a lot of light from some of my elderly neighbours homes, has huge traffic implications, could de-stabilise the one remaining pottery kiln. I hear previous Porty folk managed to block the building if a large supermarket. Think we need to object strongly to this building. Porty seems under attack from developers what with the park as well, lets not be swallowed up by new builds.

Welcome to the site Moss. I'd just like to correct you on this point, as :moss wrote: looks like they will have to build a boardwalk as it takes up some of the prom,
