See the Central Bar is shut.
Half of the pubs in Porty must be shut now. I see that the Plough is up for sale also.

All the pubs at the bottom of bath St are closed, the Pop In is a bookies and the Tides in at the foot of Kings road is closed again. Figgate Whins has been closed for ages too

There can only be a handful of pubs left now, and some of them seem to be pretty quiet ! Is the writing on the wall for pubs in this area ?

Funny. I was on the phone to my dad earlier and we were wondering if the pubs at the foot of Kings Road were still open.
Is the Tides In the one that used to be the Battery Bar?
Is the one that was the lavvies still open? Round the corner, can't mind what it was called, noticed it open and blaring music outside when i went to look at the hovercraft.

As far as I know the Tides Inn is still closed, but the lavvy one (classy!!) is called something like Forth View and was still open a couple of months ago........

I cant remember the name of that pub at all. It's had a few in it's time.
(It used to be a public toilet when I was a wee girl )

Yeh it was, its called the Forthview at the moment - also the Beach House in a previous life. Although I live in Kings road its not a pub I frequent. - It has been known to be a bit lively at the weekend :)

I usually go to the First and Last ( in fact I'm off to see if there is any decent singers at the Karaoke now !!)

See the Thai takeaway is empty as is the computer shop opposite the town hall.
The shop that used to be the travel agent near the Cancer Research is now a charity shop, had quite a big refit.

Depressing isn't it. Just what portobello needs. Not.

'Baguette Express' is opening on Wednesday, at the bottom of Brighton Place, in what used to be the tanning shop.

Looks like 2 sandwich shops are opening on the same day and barely 20 yards from each other. Notice the Deli was closed today (sunday) ???

I believe there is a notice in Kitcheners to the effect that it will no longer open on Sundays due to staffing difficulties, offering alternative sources for bread on Sundays and expressing the hope that the new owners will reinstate Sunday trading.

I'm finding the Planning Applications section on Portobello Online quite useful.

Just spotted this application for 218 Portobello High Street, or Global Video as you will know it:
Change of use from disused vido rental store to a coffee and jewellery shop, selling coffee, snacks, dress jewellery and small dress accessories.
Coffee and jewellery? Sounds like a girl thing. And you better make it a skinny latte if you want to fit into that small dress.

Ho! Old news!! Porty reported this over a year ago:
Posted: Tue Feb 13, 2007 7:44 pm

The old Global Video shop is almost refitted. Thanks to copious amounts of water from us. it's apparently going to be a jewellery shop/cafe combo.
One assumes that someone forgot to apply for planning permission at the time???

Miners?
Doubt there's many miners round here.
Monktonhall, Woolmet, Bilston, Newcraighall, all gone.
