Towerbank House

Post by Bob Jefferson » 19 May 2009, 14:17

I was interested to learn today that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle resided as a child for some time at Towerbank House, Portobello.

What else do we know about Towerbank House? I found this in the Lothians Family History Society:
I am looking for information on James Malcom or his wife Helen McCallum sometime innkeeper possibly of Towerbank House, Portobello. James died there in 1858.
And this, a contribution from Archie Foley on the Edinphoto website:
David S Hay (a 19th century photographer) was listed as a Lodger at 2 Albany Street, Edinburgh at the 1861 Census, but when he married Isabella Gourlay on 12th August 1862 his usual residence was given as Towerbank House, Portobello.
Anyone else with more info?

Had a quick look on my tea break - and there is the description "part of the lands of Figgate called Tower Bank, with 2 tenement houses thereon" and refers to a Disposition to William Ogilivie recorded PRS 10 Nov. 1868. Seems to be several houses. there. The indexes also show Tower Bank is now known as Figgate Bank.
