So how's your street?

Post by Doris » 08 Dec 2010, 13:27

Bath Street still a hazzard for both pedestrians and cars. Not a grit bin or lorry in sight. Small group of us managed to make some headway with our pavement but it's hard when there's nowhere to put the broken up ice.

Some nutters still speeding up and down the street! Heard on Forth One this morning that cars were having to slow down on the A7 because there was a woman walking on the road pushing a pram between Dalkeith and Sheriffhall Roundabout.

Yup, there's so much ice it constrains things a bit!

Council has been pretty good with sending out updates. I'm getting them via Maureen Child's email list (don't know if she's unique in forwarding them on?).

Looks like from the most recent there are quite a few grit dumps; but perhaps a bit thin on the ground on the main drag in porty?

I hadn't expected some 13 days ago to be still doing this but we are deploying everything we have to deal with snow and ice clearance and gritting. Around 70 staff have been working in our area since early this morning focussing on priority locations - it is important that resources are used in this way to make the most impact locally. Where possible teams will respond to emergency or individual situations however we are receiving calls and requests through a number of channels and our city wide and local co-ordinating teams are managing these requests. I would urge continued patience at this time as I can assure you that staff are working round the clock and are themselves working in very difficult circumstances. Where possible grit bins are being replenished and grit dumps put down for communities to use - see the updated list below of 63 locations. This is in addition to 89 grit bins which are being topped up.

I would encourage local communities, if safe to do so, to clear pathways for themselves and neighbours - please refer to the Scottish Government advice - http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Justi ... ddriveways - on dealing with winter weather. I am heartened to hear of groups and communities who are clearing their local paths and would like to acknowledge and commend these efforts.

Where there is an urgent medical priority or risk to life and limb then please let us know and we will assess for extra help - this includes such things as attending a scheduled chemotherapry or radiotherapy session, planned operations or medical treatments.

Activity for today and tomorrow detailed below.

Squad 1 - Working around the Lady Nairne vicinity clearing footways

Suspect there are more grit dumps than just those on that list. For example, there was some placed on Brighton Place, near the bridge.

Perhaps slippy pavements aren't the only thing we should be wary of in Portobello  .....http://edinburghnews.scotsman.com/topst ... 6655090.jp
