Maureen Child: Updates April 2011

Post by administrator » 01 Apr 2011, 10:10

Dear All

Some people living nearby the beach have contacted me about their property shaking as a result of the sand-moving machines which are 're-grading' the sand from west east to re-build our coastal defences. I have made sure the Council knows about this, and measures will be taken to mitigate it. This 'earthquake' side-effect of the work was not anticipated by anyone, I'm told. Once the work is done, the sand at the east will be back to the levels they were in 1988.

A regular rail commuter also been in touch about the reliability of the Crossrail trains connecting Newcraighall and Brunstane to Waverley. If you experience any delays or cancellations, now or in the future, can you please get in touch and let me know the dates and times of day, so we are in the best position to put matters right? I have been in touch with the Chief Executive of the train operator, First Scotrail, and also the Council's head of transport to express our concerns.

Please see below for details of a Grand Carnival Stramash taking place in Portobello tomorrow - sorry, short notice, I know!

This spring, Dave Roberts of Telferton Allotment Association will be running another grow your own course in association with PEDAL - Portobello Transition Town. There are five places available on the course, and the cost will be £15 per person in total (this will cover the costs of seeds, fertiliser and other materials). The course will be held at Telferton Allotments over four Saturdays — 23rd April, 7th May, 14th May, and 21st May 2011. Participants will learn how to dig, prepare and sow the beds. Thereafter it would be up to you to look after the crop, with Dave being available to assist and help where necessary until November. The course is aimed at people who have no previous growing experience and who did not attend PEDAL's previous allotment grow your own course last year (those who attended other PEDAL growing courses are, however, welcome). In the first session participants will be allocated a plot and Dave will advise on how to prepare the ground and discuss with you what you would like to grow. The following sessions will focus on preparing the ground, sowing and tending your crop. Dave is happy to help participants to grow whatever they would like, within the bounds of the growing season up until November. For more information or to book a place, contact Dave Roberts by e-mail : dave2doreen@btinternet.com .

The Council is carrying out a consultation throughout the city to learn from the winter's severe weather and how to do it better. Many of you have already contributed to that discussion, through responses to my emails over the period all of which have been passed on and will form part of our local response and set new priorities when severe weather strikes again in future. The Portobello/Craigmillar Neighbourhood Partnership and management are organising a meeting to contribute to this consultation. It will be held on Wednesday 11 May in the Hays Business Centre, Hay Avenue, EH16 4QA. More information will be circulated nearer the time, but the two main things to consider will be what worked well and what we think could be improved. If you haven't yet contributed to this debate, through me, or in any other way, then please feel free to comment now.

Have a good weekend!
Maureen

Maureen Child: Update 7/4/2011

Dear All

Portobello Community Council's 'hustings-organising group' have asked me to forward details of the hustings being held on Tuesday 19 April with the four candidates seeking to represent the constituency of Edinburgh Eastern in the Scottish Parliament - see their poster attached for more details. The meeting is in Portobello Old Parish Church Hall, Bellfield Street, 7.30pm to 9pm. Questions can be put in the Hall on the night, but can also be emailed in advance to the PCC team: portobello.hustings@hotmail.co.uk The organisers ask you to include your name and whether or not you will be at the hustings.

Craigmillar community groups are also organising a hustings that week - the evening of Thursday 21 April. I will let you have the details when I have them confirmed.

This weekend - Sunday 10 April - is the Edinburgh Half Marathon. An estimated 4000 runners will set off from Meadowbank from 8am and head along Portobello Promenade towards Eastfield and Musselburgh. The event will be finished by 12 noon - even if the runners aren't!

Another date for your diary is the Archaeology Open Day in connection with the Niddrie Burn Restoration Project in Hunter's Hall Park, Jack Kane Centre, Niddrie from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 16 April. There will be an opportunity to meet the archaeologists working on the site, see the finds, and explore the remains of the Ice House which one of the remaining historic fragments of Niddrie House which were uncovered in the dig. Sturdy footwear is required. Free entry, of course.

Next week, the local rowing club, Rowporty are having an event and launch from Portobello beach. They are planning to take their new skiff along the Prom from Joppa to Bath Street on Sunday 17th April at 12 noon and then launching her in front of the sailing club near the foot of Bath Street. They hope to get the Royal West rowing club to attend and present the club with one of the original Porty rowing trophies, so it can be fought over on the water in July at the Porty Regatta (30 and 31 July 2011). Yesterday, Rowporty members collected one of the original 'Jolly' boats from Portobello, which was lying in a shed (for years) at Broughty Ferry. Photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/versevend/ ... 319660953/

Rowporty intend to have this original, solid-wood, clinker-built boat in the water for the launch. They would love it if people came down to support them just by being there on the day -so please spread the word! The rowers will probably spend the afternoon on the water trying out the new boat and having a few races between buoys. More on their website http://rowporty.org.uk

The coastal defence work involving 'regrading' of sand is causing a bit of stir down Portobello way on April Fool's Day and made the Guardian blog . The link is: http://www.guardian.co.uk/edinburgh/201 ... ing-houses

I have said to the Council officers that the local resident's next priority will be rebuilding the eastern-most gabion groyne and they say this is the Council's coastal defence investment priority too. It is just possible the work to replace the groyne in the - most effective position (not necessarily where it is now) - might be done this financial year, as the current work came in under budget.

Do let me know if you need any updates on anything else.

Best wishes

Maureen

Maureen Child: Update 15/04/2011

Post by administrator » 15 Apr 2011, 11:45

Dear All

As I said last week, Community Regeneration Forum (CRF), the Craigmillar-based 'umbrella' organisation for local neighbourhood associations, is holding a Question Time for the Scottish Parliamentary candidates for the area on Thursday, 21 April at 6.30pm in the Hays Community Business Centre, Hay Avenue, EH16 4AQ. Each of the four candidates will have a few minutes to put their case, followed by open questions from the audience. Everyone welcome.

A reminder that the Portobello Hustings meeting is in Portobello Old Parish Church Hall, Bellfield Street, 7.30pm to 9pm. Questions can be put in the Hall on the night, but can also be emailed in advance to the PCC team: portobello.hustings@hotmail.co.uk. (My apologies that a comma crept in to last week's link!) Organisers ask you to include your name and whether or not you will be at the hustings.

I have been asked to tell you about Porty sings for Water! This is a big mass sing to raise money for Wateraid. 'Scotland sings for Water' is taking place in Edinburgh on Saturday 2nd July. This involves singing 6 great songs in harmony with about 299 other folk - it should be a great sound! If you like singing and are interested in taking part, Penny Stone and Jane Lewis from Protest in Harmony will be teaching the songs at 3 sessions in Portobello Community Centre in May and June. Tuesday 17th May; Wednesday 1st June; and Wednesday 22nd June All sessions are 7.30 - 9.30pm. They ask for a small donation from everyone to cover the cost of the room (it only costs £10 for the 2 hours, so is very reasonable) Everyone is welcome to join in, you don't need to be able to read music, or to live in Portobello. If you want to take part, you need to register. This costs £5 and includes a learning pack and a CD with parts for all the songs (cheques payable to 'Band of Song'). You can do this by letting Jane Lewis know by email to jane@gn.apc.org by 24 April, and sending a cheque to Jane Lewis at 252 (1F2) Portobello High Street, EH15 2AT. Jane can then obtain the packs from the organisers and (hopefully!) get them to you before 17 May. Please be sure to include your name, address and contact details. The request is for everyone who is taking part to raise at least £40 for Wateraid and Jane can send you the sponsorship form when you register. The 'Sing for Water' project was started by composer Helen Chadwick in 2002. Since then, almost £500,000 has been raised by singers all over Britain. On the big day, 2nd July, all singers will gather from 10 to 12 noon for a rehearsal at Old St Paul's Church, Market Street, Edinburgh. After a lunch break, they will gather in Parliament Square by St Giles Cathedral in the Royal Mile to sing from 1pm until 3.30pm. Great fun and good music in a good cause! More information on http://www.wateraid.org.uk

More reminders! that the Archaeology Open Day in connection with the Niddrie Burn Restoration Project in Hunter's Hall Park, Jack Kane Centre, Niddrie, 10am - 4pm, tomorrow, Saturday 16 April. You might also go along to the fantastic White House Exhibition, open on Saturdays (also Tuesdays to Fridays) at 70 Niddrie Mains Road, open from 10.30am to 3.30pm. 500 hundred visitors have enjoyed the exhibition so far.

And remember that Rowporty are having a very 'watchable' event and launch from Portobello beach on Sunday 17th April afternoon.

Have a good weekend!
