This is great! The Portobello Reporter was the first paper to run the story (see the online version Winter 2005 - front page, of course!) It was then picked up by the others. I wrote to a man at Cadbury at the time, but he wasn't convinced - said he would add our interesting theory to all the others! Looks like another front-pager!

I noticed some Free the Porty 99 graffiti on the Prom wall today, opposite the entrance to Straiton Place Park

Campaign to restore origin of the 99 Flake to seaside town could see ten foot ice cream built

One man has got a sweet idea to revive a campaign to reclaim one of the nation’s best-loved summer treats.

Paul Lambie is calling on ice-cream lovers to recognise Portobello as the true home of the ‘99’ ice cream cone.

The seaside favourite, consisting of a cone, ice cream and Cadbury’s Flake, is described on Cadbury’s website as having been invented in 1920s County Durham by a sales manager, who named the snack 99 after the popular phrase at the time meaning special or first class.
